Firebrand opposition agitator role is okay for Mamata Banerjee. But will she remain firebrand even as Chief Minister. Her first days evoked resentment in Hospital management. She stormed a local hospital not as a responsinble C.M but with her unruly supporters and some news reporters. The medical officer on duty showed exemplary courage by objecting to presence of media in the course of her official visit.

I am least surprised to see this post and the link which patently displays bias, prejudice of the worst kind and lack of knowledge of realities in West Bengal. There are some people who are viscerally opposed to Mamata and whatever she does! Now coming to the incident which has been positively covered by the local press. The long misrule of the Left Front has caused almost irreversible damage in the fields of education and health. The party head quarters usurped the role of the state administration and packed the universities and hospitals with its 'own people'. I would rquest Gulshan to go through the Metro section of today's 'The Telegraph' to have a first hand knowledge of the same hospital whose superintendent's exemplary act of 'courage his link has glorified. The paper carried the scenes of a vertiable hell at thhis hospital. Every administration runs on a chain of authority and an incompetent superintendent only takes refuge in a show of defiance and insubordination. The Chief Minister who holds the charge of health has every right to visit any hospital and see the state of affairs himself or herself and there was absolutely nothing wrong in it , more so when her predecessor remained insensitive to the sufferings of the ailing poor people of the state and virtually sold off this sector to the sharks of the private sector. Let not our anti-Mamata mindset cloud our judgement and fairness!!
I agree that the C.M. has every right to inspect any establishment. But this must be in a decorum and hooligans/ media should not accompany.

Hooliganism? Where did you get this report from? A superior in the administration hierarchy has asked her subordinate to meet her at Writers' at any time of his convenience.I think the entire local press has risen to salute her initiatives to cleanse the Augean stables which have been there for a long time!

It is reported in the Deccan Herald that at time of C.M.'s visit, a crowd had gathered and media were also present. This is what the Hospital authority objected to. Gathering of crowd and media with a view to frighten the hospital authority is nothing but hooliganism. In her first tenure as C.M., Mayavati, U.P. C.M. would also similarly humiliate officers but now she has sobered.

I am very pleased as well as thankful to Chinmoy for giving his valuable comments. I feel something missing when I do not find him in these posts.

Thanks Gulshan! As far as my position with regard to this issue is concerned, I would prefer to go by my gut feeling and personal experience. You have mentioned Deccan Herlad's report which is a distortion of facts and I can cite scores of other papers - especially - the vernacular ones which have come out strongly in support of new CM's initiatives. Government-run educational and health facilities are for poor and common people but our comrades never thought of the common people. They abolished study of English at the primary levels only to send their wards to leading English-medium schools and whenever they fell ill never used these state-run hospitals and made it a point to rush to private nursing homes and people of West Bengal obviously saw through their vicious games of double-speak and worse. If the Communist Party of India (Marxist) has been unceremoniously shown the door it's not the collective foolish and mad acts of Bengal electorate but a rational and conscious as well as conscentious exercise of their democratic rights and no power on earth can belittle or insult the popular decision!
Thanks Chinmoy for portraying the position in West Bengal. Similarly, in U.P., socialist party (presently samajvadi party Mulayam sing etc. successors of Socialist Party) leaders Ram Manohar Lohia and others discouraged English but the leaders' own children studied in costly English medium convent schools. Similarly about medical treatment. Peoples' opinion is always respected. Let us hope that West Bengal will flourish under new leadership.

Thanks Gulshan once again for your openness of mind and clarity with which you always express your thoughts and views which, I just hope, our young members can learn and emulate!
