What exactly does Nationalism mean to you ?

To me Nationalism is to: pay respect to your country... contribute in every possible aspect for its development and growth... and be honest to the nation!!!

At the same time,nationalism should respect and tolerate others' views in respect to religion .the strong feeling, " my view is the only view" should be erased from the mind in order to be called as a Nationalist.

"My view is the only view" - That has nothing to do with any ISM. That is egoism that divides everything in between "Me and rest of the world" Unless we learn to respect others' point of view, Nationalism is hard to achieve. ME has no place in a Nationalist.

Thatz right!!! But sometimes we become victims of our own egos.... a fact that we all know quite well.

The moment you fall to the diktats of your egoism, you are a chauvinist, which is a blind belief. Dictators, who fell by the wayside belong to this category. What you need is loyalty without being Chauvinistic.

That is a human failing that is there in all of us in different degrees.But when politicians have too much power in their hands they forget everything else except their own importance and power over others. They become more of a menance than help the nation..

We hear people and especially our netas lecturing and giving speeches about Nationalism, patriotism blah blah on national days while taking part in the flag hoisting ceremony !!!! and go on to loot the country without feeling any guilt..
On the other hand we have people who hate anything west and whether it is right or wrong, staunchly defend the country ! What is your idea of being a patriot or a Nationalist ?

For me true Nationalism would be people off all states living in harmony and oneness with each other without regionalism, communalism and other such negative things that hamper integration of the country. Unfortunately we are still to reach that state.

It is necessary to know the National Song, National Anthem, National Emblem, National Flag, National Animal, National sport, National Flower and National Bird. This is all about the pride of India. If you don't know them, if you don't know the history and geography of India, then you don't love your country. It is so because you are neglecting the pride of our nation.
Moreover, this will make you feel dedicated towards your nation. It is necessary. Actually all Indians must respect India by heart and learn the above right from their childhood.

But these defense forces and police services are constituted of people. The underlying principle is one should have that quality of patriotism. I f the people in the defense services and police forces are filled with people lacking patriotism, do you think they can protect you and provide peaceful conditions?

True nationalism is following your civic duties.

Nationalism does not mean you get stuck in your country and never leave your place of stay and overlook all the obvious faults...Many people seem to think that the moment you criticise a certain aspect you become a traitor which is far from truth ! You need to have your eyes open so that you are aware of everything that is there and happening around you and if possible contribute to bring in a positive change !

True. A Nationalist is one who keeps an eye on the lapses, irregularities happening around and lends his helping hand in eradicating the social evils without expecting a return. Turning a Nelson's eye and having the mindset of " what's there for me in it" is mere escapism. Not Nationalism.

I agree. True patriot would not turn his back on the problems. He would do everything within his power to change any wrong or illegal things happening around him.
