It is due to one single reason, most senior players have gone out of team almost together and Clark is not on good terms with watson, the main payer of Ausy team.
This time they need good captaincy like ricky ponting or steave waugh . Players are still good but not getting right direction and they need to some expert bowlers like macgrath.
Their players or management is also in the news for all the wrong reasons. First Andrew Symonds was dropped from the team as he skipped the practice session, then he announced his retirement. Then patch up between captain Clarke and Vice Captain Watson. Then the coach Arthur was sacked. And now Warner was involved in fight with Root in pub which led him to be dropped from the initial Ashes test. Aus team is facing some tough period now.
I hope they will bownce back with new energy and will get number one slot again.
Its the Punter... and Punter all the way... He was the one to take team to the top from the worse situation... and he has always done it.... Although Steve played a major part earlier in putting together the team... But ponting took it forward well. the day he retired... downfall started..

It is normal. players can't play whole life. It is happen with every team. Team Ausy will be recover from it.

That's it, if we go on recalling old players who cannot play any more, that is not going to help our cause. We should see current reasons and their remedies. Old is gone.
I believe it has more to do with the management and selection policy. Australia has no shortage of talent, but I don't think the Australian Board is managing them well. The likes of Shaun Marsh and Cameron White are missing, even though they are in good form and are more experienced.

Also, the dispute within the team is not helping their cause.
Don’t you think Australian selectors should emulate the present trend of Indian selecting system? In the recent past, Indian selectors prepared a strong Stand by team, while the main team is kept as it is. An altogether new team consisting of young and talented players who proved their mettle in IPL and other Local tournaments was constitited. By this the youngsters will always rare to go with their respective performances.
This not only worked well. But resulted in contributing to give players like Shikar Dhawan , Nadeem to name a few. The recent tour of Zimbabwe and tri series are the proof. In none of the above tournaments our senior players were present.
Continuous success has gone into their head. When such a thing happens, downfall starts.

In other words this phase comes to almost every team, there has never been a single team on top of the table ever since the game of cricket started.

Its not cricket, its about every sport. What goes up some day comes down. This is nature and with time things do change their place
Every rise has the slope to deal with, for Australia this is inevitable, India also suffered in the recent past, and it is changing due to advent of young and fearless successful players, Australia should pursue this and try hard to find out their real talent so that they can grab back their lost glories.
I think the players and management are not confident. They should do well in the next series. A win will definitely boost team's morale.

I know Australian team and their way of working, they will come back with a bang to take every thing in their stride. Do not underestimate them or any other team.

They have already started to fire the under performers. Arthur was thrown out and Lehman was appointed as the coach. Lets wait and see how he does . Deccan Chargers won IPL when he was coach.

The present series is almost over, now we must keep a watch on how they move from here onward.

Yes its almost over. They need to take positives from the series. Steven Smith and Rogers did well in the series for Australia.
Since Ponting, Langr, Hayden, McGrath and Shane Warne retired, the Aussies have also lost the top position. They were unbeaten when these great players were in the team. However, it will take time for the new team to make their impression. But it's difficult to regain the position now.
