New Delhi: In a rare decision just a month ahead of the Budget, Railway Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal Wednesday effected an across-the-board hike in fares of all classes from midnight of January 21 to net an additional Rs 6,600 crore a year, the first such increase in a decade.

It will effect all commodities but it should be increased as everything is increasing and rail can not run in loss.

No i beg to differ with you. Nothing is running in losses. They were made to run in losses by the political Bandicoots.
But it has increased after a long break. Train fare should be increased due to price hike of everything.

What's price hike? Is it not the incapability of the rulers who patronize black marketeers?

Yes Sir you are right but if they want to find out the blackmarketters then many rulers will come in net.

Yes, you are right Rambabu I agree with you, losses are not made by locals but by the political Bndicoots

And its difficult to catch these bandicoots. They are well protected by the higher ups
Here I have different take on this issue. The pre-revision level of Rail fare is not inflation-linked. If other modes of travel have been allowed to revise their rates according to prevailing rate of inflation, why Indian Railways should be deprived of it??? Laloo or Mamata was missing the larger picture and mind it - that these persons are selfish enough to encourage populism for their own political benefits. They are not spending single farthing from their own pockets! If Railways becomes sick it has to be bailed out from own money - today, tomorrow or thereafter!!!
People will make big sounds when train fare is hiked a little. But they will keep their mouth shut when state government hikes the bus fare even double. I do not know what the reason behind is.

You are right and I find this anger a little unjustified. Just compare the fares some ten years back between the rail fare and other modes!

Even after this rail fare hike, it will be less compared to bus fare here in Tamilnadu since Chief minister Miss. Jayalalithaa announced a heavy hike bus fares after she took charge.
