Yes that is an old tradition there, that makes them feel hat this practice would be good for their kids but that is a risky job.
There are many bizarre practices causing hurt or even fatal injury. There is one Holi festival function of stone fighting. In Mathura district a Panda goes through fire as a Holi festival ritual. Women beat men with sticks. A few daya back, I saw a report on TV showing the ritual of men getting trampled under running bulls' feet.
It is not only risky but sheer stupidity and blind belief which makes them do such things, many NGOs and women's organisations have been complaining against this practice but politicians dont want to interfere because it may make the believers angry..When Michael Jackson dangled his son outside the window of his hotel room to show him to the crowd it became such a big issue , regarding the safety of the child, but here throwing a child ... :

Even now in most of the villages, people follow these types of superstitious rituals. Even educated peoples still follow this stupidity.
And that's really ridiculous thing for me.. I have seen such things on TV where they do it with very small kids. Those kids even don't know whats going on with them.
Just imagine the trauma they undergo while that is done, there was an incident when a child slipped out of the saree that is held below and got hurt, but even after that the tradition goes on...

Police say hat they cannot stop this practice, because no mishap was reported and no one objected to the ritual
