i think it is because of the calmness the green color gives the patients. and further it is followed from long back.....
I think and i am not confident that the green color gives less pain

It is because that green colour symbolises of vegetation and people drift in to a dream like state.

I think there is some other reason for using it.
I think the reason is blood being red in color would show more prominently and also looks scary against white color clothes. Also, may be that the green color has a wave length close to that of red.
Abhiskek you are partially correct. If blood stains occur on white cloth then it worries and scores the doctor and even patient. if it is green then blood color looks black on green color and there will be no much effect

but why specifically green...the same result can be achieved with black, blue colors......why do we use only green then?

If it is black we cannot know how much blood is sucked by the cloth and if it is blue, it is also like white and more thing, green gives some pleasantness to the patient. It gives some bravery to the patient that nothing may not happen

i think green colour stands for prosperity and well being. it soothes one's eyes and so may be that is the reason.
