A generator uses fuel as input. Fuel is heat energy. Thus ultimately heat energy is converted to electrical energy. Possibly, heat energy is first converted to mechanical energy that is reconverted to electrical energy. The answer can best be given by a Science or engineering student. My answer is based on Google search.
