700 kids born w/ genetic disabilities due to cousin marriageThe problem is worst among children born in Britain's Pakistani community, where more than half of marriages are between first cousins, and children are 10 times more likely than the general population to suffer genetic disorders.
The medical risks of first cousin marriages include higher rates of infant mortality, birth defects, learning difficulties, blindness, hearing problems and metabolic disorders.

Good link nataraj,
but apart from defects,
In my view I don't think so, because it is good for both the persons as they know each other from their childhood and it is good for the families as well, as they don't have to adjust with a new person.
I saw many cases where society is opposing those persons who love their cousins. Because of this many lovers are not coming out with their feelings and just kill their love for each other, and then marry some other persons, which put 4 lives at risk.

This thrad is a good answer to my question about swam ghotra marriage prohibited by Hindu traditions. The nerws is alarming. Even if there is some type of emotional attachment, the first cousins must control themselves. Marriage is not only for personal satisfaction but this also lays foundation for a new family, which is smallest social unit. Social responsibility should overwegh personal emotions.

its a myth actually
the chance of a kid with genetic defect are 2-3 % in normal cases and when done in cousins its chances increase to 4-5% so there is is difference of just 2%
so it do increase genetic desease chance but not as much as its hyped + even if you are not cousin still the kid can have genetic defects so its not a rule of thumb
