Yes friends!! It is true. It happened in 1950. India had qualified for World Cup football. But unfortunately couldn't participate ..reason is shocking!!

Our players didn't have shoes due to financial incapability. FIFA didn't allow them to play bare foot. ..

Friends !! What are your views ?

Ya I know that we have been qualified but the reason mentioned is really shocking...
Apart from this India once qualified in the semi finals of the Olympic in soccer and finished fourth in Mellbourne Olympics. The team was led by Samar ( Badru) Banerjee. Those were golden moments of Indian soccer.
Ya I know that we have been qualified but the reason mentioned is very silly :)
Whether reason is silly or shocking... :(
Fact is fact.. :)
no defect in this fact....
These are new information for me.It is very sad no shoe company could sponsor shoes for our team at that time
It is really shocking news and unfortunate thing..I have know this before..thanks for the information.. I have a doubt, do they have to wear any special shoes for playing football or spikes is enough as used in cricket...??
This is surprising. Cricket and hockey players had no such problems. Why only the football players faced financial difficulty and could not get even shoes is beyond comprehension. This is pity.
What was the criteria for entering the world cup then? Just to know how to play???
May be fewer countries used to play in Asia and India dominated Asian soccer in the fifties and even in the sixties. On the basis of our rank in India we might have met the eligibility criteria.
:woohoo: This in indeed shocking news!! The only time we qualify, the shoes are missing!! :(

I wonder how many more years it will take for our team to qualify again!!
Although I am an incorrigible optimist I don't think India would be able to do it in the next 25 years!
I was not aware of this... must have been very disgusting to the Indian team that shoes were more improtant than performance!
25 years is a long span of time..
Anything can happen..
If our Football federation authorities get strong will power (accidentally or somehow) to get India qualify for the world cup. It can happen... ... :)
@Chinmoy, I think 25 years is not so long period, 50 years is more like it!!! :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:
@Kumaresh

Now take my 25 as 50 years as Kalyani is suggesting!
In fact the scenario is still very bad as far as Indian sports is concerned except for cricket. None other sports are being promoted in the manner cricket is being promoted.
That's very true but in the case of soccer we had a chequered past and only in the last few decades our standards have deteriorated very sharply.
I think this is mainly because the deserving and talented players do not have access to appropriate sources nor do they have proper opportunities!! Lack of funds for one thing decides the future of any sport!!
Unfortunately whatever funds are allocated to sports, how much of it actually is spent for the benefit of the players is questionable!
I covered one tragic incident in the site about a footballer who represented the state of U.P didn't have a regular job and he was planning to sell one of his kidneys to support his family!!
