Round Pumpkins are tied to the home for house warming ceremonies (with face of a rakshas as a tool to help ward off evil spirits).

Question: What are the reasons for using pumpkins? Sometimes accompanied by lemons also..

    I have often wondered about this !!! Lemons are supposed to ward off evil spirits and at the same time keep the air free of harmful microorganisms in the air!! Don;t know anything about pumpkins!!

    Pumpkins are somewhat cheap to be hanged in plenty!!!I hadn't heard this custom

    To some extent, pumpkins, more particularly ash gourds are easily available and it is just they are large and do not spoil soon.

    I suppose this custom is more prevalant in South.

    Also , it is convenient to paint faces of rakshas/demons on pumpkin or ash-pumpkin..And lemons help to make the air fresh as Kalyani said.


    Now, any new vehicles are run over lemons..Why? .. I think the answer should now be known..

    I know that Ash Gourds are hanged in front of home but the reason behind is not known...
