Piercing body for ornaments
in General Discussions
There is practice of piercing nose, ears and may be some other body parts also for using ornaments. Nose rings and ear rings need piercing. Piercing not only is painful but it seems disgusting that we disfigure human body for sake of ornamentation. The ornaments like bangles and necklace can be worn without piercing.

I think practice of piercing of body should be abolished. Small girl children undergo the pain of piercing of ears. I request users to kindly share their views.

    Yes... its a Hindu tradition to pierce nose and ears....

    But in the recent times, this practice has turned to be a fashion...

    I have seen some actress piercing navel, tongue, and top of the ear. This custom has turned to fashion!!!

    Ear piercing maybe is okay as the pain is only for a few seconds.. but when we see anybody piercing the tongue or lip or abdomen, it seems we feel more pain than the person. This should indeed be abolished.

    There are cases where people have entered guiness book of records for the number of piercings done.

    Ear piercing is a Hindu tradition and is a part of "Solah Samskaras" (sixteen essential rites) and is a must for boys as well as girls. Since this is performed at a very early age, ie when the babies are 1-2 months old, the cartilage tissue of ears is not yet fully developed hence it is less painful.

    but regards the piercing of other body parts such as naval, tongue, eyebrows, and the private parts......I think it is a question of that person's sanity..... :( In the West, body piercing is seen as a means of defying prevalent rules and expressing freedom (freedom from what???) and in some cases to satisfy carnal urges!!!

    Piercing of ears is our custom and earrings will add more beauty to a girl. May be it is not needed for boys. Piercing of other parts of the boy may not be needed.

    Ayurveda associates nostril's piercing location with the female reproductive organs. Accordingly the nose piercing is supposed to make childbirth easier and lessen period pain during women's natural menstrual course and periods.

    But we should be very careful while piercing the ear or nose, no passing nerve system should be disturbed or wounded. It should be done by an experienced goldsmith.

    Kumaresh- Your information of Ayurveda reasons for piercing male nose is unique. But how can a goldsmith be better expert than a doctor on piercing sensitive organ like nose. An ENT specialist doctor should be more qualified in this regard.
