Some horses lie down a lot, but most horses don't lie down that much, because, as prey animals, they need to be constantly alert, and ready to run away, should something attack.
Horses can sleep standing up, as their legs have a specialised locking mechanism which means they don't fall over.

Now where is the tread starter, he must tell us why don't they sit? He is sitting in his office and we are analyzing here weather or not they sit. So this is finally proved that horses do not sit due to their knee bone structure.

It is probably their natural instinct that does not allow them to sit, as they have to be constantly alert in which they feel secure only when standing!

The fact is that while they are kept in tied position even in the best of stables, they stay in standing position. But they cannot have proper rest in that position for longer duration so they lie on their sides as they can not band their rear legs more than a certain angle.

that is true Sunil, but as far as I know not all horses lie down for rest, most horses sleep well while standing on their feet and since they have a special kind of locking mechanism in their knees, they do not fall over!
