I agree the names you have mentioned as honest politicians are the ones who have succeeded in maintaing a relatively clean public image. But as far as my position is concerned I am non-commital on this question given to my scanty knowledge about their activities. In this context, I remember a controversy surrounding Mr. Chidambaram when he was Finance Minister of the UPA Government when his wife was engaged as the counsel for the Income Tax Department. In India such is the state of affairs that until and unless some dishonest acts appear in the media,we tend to assume ones who are left out, are honest. That's also fallacious because a very small percentage of such cases, comes under media scrutiny!
About the sweeping generalization you have made that the dishonest ones are alert and efficient , I express my complete disagreement. I would just point to Late Satyendra Dubey murder case. This honest, young IIT product sacrificed his life trying to act as a whistle-blower in his attempt to expose the corruption in the form of looting of public money in National Highway Projects.

I have observed that some of the politicians who are not career politicians are the one who fare much better on this count. For example Arun Shourie, who was a cabinet minister in Bajpayee Government and among the current politicians,I admire Jairam Ramesh,Shashi Tharoor who established themeslves in their respective fields before joining politics. What do you think?
There is another aspect. In the pre-Independence era all our leading politicians were highly educated, some of them completed their masters reading in jails! Their commitment to idealism and honesty was due to their receiving true education. Thus most of the honest leaders belonged to that era!
Kumaresh- Although we can't be sure about any one's honesty, we should be satisfied if some body performs well and there are no serious allegations of corruption against him in courts of law. Legally speaking, everyone is innocent unless otherwise proved. By suspecting everyone, we shall be nowhere.

I am giving a few more names of the leaders of our glorious past like Netaji Subhash who refused to join I.C.S even after passing it with flying colours,Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, his brother Vithalbhai Patel,Deshbandhu C.R.Das the mentor of Netaji who gave everything even his house which is the current address of a cancer hospital,Chakarvarty Raja Gopalalachari, whom Mahatma described as his 'conscience keeper'. I have tried to give a few names of many such towering leaders.

Mr. Lohit , I think, you are not aware of development of Gujarat.
UN Sasakawa Award for disaster reduction, CAPAM award for innovation in governance, UNESCO award, CSI award for e-governance, No.1 state in industrial investment (MOUs), No 1 among major health care services, availability and utility of infrastructure, Indiatech award in power sector is an indicative list of what Gujarat achieved under the able chief ministership of Narendra Modi. The very fact that Narendra Modi has been ranked as the number one chief minister by the public for the second consecutive year speaks volumes about his achievements.

There is one politician in Andhra Pradesh, Jai Prakash Narayana who is the president of Lok Satta and was an IAS earlier before he joined politics. Also he resigned his IAS position as he was not able to adjust with the corrupt politicians. Hope people who are well educated and know what politics is come into politics and make India bright. Also there should be an entrance exam for would-be politicians so that atleast educated men and women come into this field...
I find some very good comments being made since my last post. There is a suggestion for our bright and upright youth to join politics,it is worth considering. We just can not afford to be arm chair critics. If our home stinks in dirts and filths what do we do? Similarly Mr.Narendra Modi's name has been cited as one of model lealders. His achievements have been evaluated in purely physical terms of progress. He is also like L.K.Advani. These two leaders have never been found to be indulging in personal corruption. But their espousal of extreme ideology of Hindutva have made them less acceptable to the minority. With all the good progress Gujarat has been making under Narendra Modi history would not spare him for some of his actions. All we know how much of progress the erstwhile Soviet Russia made under Stalin but look today! The history has not been very kind to him for some of his violent and brutal methods of purging the dissident elements in the party!
