The most common reason,to my mind, may be to to ensure uniformity in sartorial matters which goes to create a sense of equality amongst students!
To make children feel every one are same, all are human beings no big no small

Yes i am agree with chinmoyji and Fathima .The sense of equality begins from school. so school uniform is essential.

To show that all children are equal they keep uniform as unity that is they are one and equal

They should not be differentiated. All are same in the school.
Uniform identifies individuals with establishment, institution or organization. That is why uniform is prescribed for police, army, railway staff, schools. Even where full uniform is not prescribed, a dress code is prescribed.

so that all children can behave with each other equally. the child of rich family can be a friend and cope up with child of poor family . It is done so that there can never be difference in children.
To show equality the uniform system is maintained and i think even it give identity that this child is school going child. We also have uniform for defense services, medical services etc. may be for identification.
uniform is the symbol unity. so thats why schools prefer children to wear uniform.
