Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa among Time's 25 most influential women

Washington, Nov 20 (IANS) Former Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi and Albanian nun Mother Teresa, who made India her home, are among Time magazine's '25 Most Powerful Women of the Past Century.'

The US news magazine's survey of 'the women who have most influenced our world' is topped by Jane Addams, an outspoken advocate for women's suffrage, who was the first American woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and includes US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in the sixth place.

Indira Gandhi ranked ninth, figured on TIME cover when she was elected prime minister in 1966 with a line reading, 'Troubled India in a Woman's Hands.'

'Those steady hands went on to steer India, not without controversy, for much of the next two decades through

recession, famine, the detonation of the nation's first atomic bomb, a corruption scandal and a civil war in neighbouring Pakistan that, under her guidance, led to the creation of a new state, Bangladesh,' the magazine said.

'By the time she was assassinated, in 1984, Gandhi was the world's longest-serving female prime minister, a distinction she holds to this day.'

Of Mother Teresa, ranked 22nd, Time said: 'Her iconic white garb with its blue stripe trim is now equated with her ideals of service and charity among 'the poorest of the poor.''

'Sometimes criticised for lacking adequate medical training, not addressing poverty on a grander scale, actively opposing birth control and abortion and even cosying up to dictators, the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize nonetheless inspired countless volunteers to serve, and will wear her white habit all the way to Catholic sainthood,' it said.

Thanks for sharing the list! In spite of being known as ruthless and certainly no less cruel at times, Indira Gandhi is still remembered for steering India to some degree of sanity during the times of turmoil!
I have only one issue which is the order of ranking.Hilary Clinton holds sixth whereas Mother Teresa 22nd!!!!!!!!!

Yes that troubles me too! But then, it seems like power and politics have more influence than humanitarian acts of kindness!
thanks neetu sharing such an list of information from past to present till the day.....nice posting........
You are right,Kalyani! Even if that be the criterion Indira Gandhi should have figured ahead of Hilary Clinton!
Thanks for providing this list.....Neetu...

Mother teresa is a real icon....
Similarly Margaret Thatcher's 23rd rank has also surprised me a lot!
Thanks for sharing the list,Neetu.Mother Teresa has got a place in the hearts of all human beings. That matters than the numerical ranking. :) :)
I dont think Mother Teresa needs any ranking or is comparable with these women...she is extrodinary and once is a while God sends such people to prove that he exist.. :)
If the list was some more long I think some more names from India would have there.
I also feel Mother Teresa could have been left out of the list she belongs to a different list altogether!!

Chinmoy, the fact that the survey is done by a US magazine clarifies the ranking! Naturally the respondents to the survey would be US residents majorly and also cannot forget that Indira is long gone whereas Hillary has managed to endear herself to many by managing to keep her composure and dignity gracefully during her husband's scandal!

Same is the situation with Margaret Thatcher being ranked at 23!
I also think that they had considered only some outside US and those who know by name only!
Thanks for taking pains to provide complete list of influential women. The list includes influential women who had an impact irrespective of any controversy about them. Despite some undemocratic trends and personality cult, Indira Gandhi was in control of affairs for many years. Mother Teresa was born in Yugoslavia but India was her land of action.
