Some drink for health of others. The Hindu women starve for health of husbands. I fail to understand how this prolongs husband's life. Now some husbands also observe fast on this day for health of wife. If this were really a way to give longer life to somebody, why not fast for somebody in death bed.

Karina does not believe in starving to show love to her husband. This is indeed sensible.

I think fast as long as not forced to do so is the belief of individual and no one can stop it from doing so, but a forceful fast is always a crime, just like above mentioned Sati practices.

Religious beliefs and faith in observing rituals should be left to the will of the individual . More we force, more friction is likely to arise.
There is just another fast that mothers observe for son's life. I wonder why father does not observe fast. Also why fast for son and not daughter.

Mothers and fathers both pray for their sons and daughters but in their own ways, while mothers prayed from their homes, fathers toiled in fields to keep their offspring alive but both made their efforts in their own ways. Now working women do not keep fast in traditional ways but they rub shoulders with men. And who said they do not do it for their daughters? Daughters are today as important as sons used to be. Ask any member here on this site who would opine otherwise.

No doubt, fathers have also good wishes for son and daughter both. But here is matter of festivals exclusively for life and health of male- husband or son. The fasts are by wife or mother. The beneficiary is husband/ son.

Yes. Different festivals aimed at different purposes.

In that case members should refrain from taking thread to other directions. I don't know about others but I do it for well being/sympathy of my wife. My wife do it for our only child, our daughter.
This is India which is multi cultural and there are different traditions among Hindus, this is what is called a pluralistic society.

Every one is right in his own right. No use in arguing defending the veracity of each argument. It leads to friction. There are lot of ways. let each choose his own way.
Nowe Karwa Chauth is over. I wish long life, good health, prosperity and happiness to all husbands, wives, singles irrespective of whether they obsaerved fast or not.
