No single women evening walk, no love marriage in Baghpat (western U.P.)

The Khap Panchayats in Bagpat (Ex Union minister ajit singh constituency) decided that love marriages are not permitted. There will be evening walk by young women unless accompanied by family members. Even then women must cover their head.

Thankfully, there is no severe punishment for love marriage. Only the couple must leave the area.

I do not agree with such decision. It appears that Khap panchayats are living not in twenty first century. They have a mindset of one thousand years back.

Even then, they are our fellow citizens. The youth should understand their sentiments also. They are certainly not selfish.

As long as Khap panchayats do not turn aggressive or indulge in coercion, they have to be tolerated and accommodated. But if they exceed limit, law must take its own course and make them realize that their word is not law.

I live not far from that are and know who is doing that. They will not allow any women less than 40 to allow to go to market or any woman going out should carry a cellphone. But those are from the community known for its such FARMANS, this is our government's duty to see to it no such Fatwas are accepted.

I have seen in Amir Khan show Satyamev Jayte that khaps were very much against love Marraige.

They have their own rules and they don't follow our Constitution.

When we talk of secrets, we should differentiate between their types. The secrets are generally group secrets. These have to be shared in the group. Even the top military secrets have to be shared among the top generals. Budget proposals are secret but these are shared between Finance Minister, Finance Secretary and other officers. You have may have some secrets about your disease. But this is to be revealed to your doctor. You have to disclose your property or income secrets to your advocate and Income Tax Department. Nothing is absolutely secret. You need only keep secret from unrelated persons.

Traditionally, arranged marriage and not love marriage is the norm. The Panchayats are just adhering to old beliefs and nothing else. The young and old should talk to each other and bring reconciliation. It is no use confrontation between old and new.

As long as the Panchayats only express their views and guide others, we cannot find fault with them. They have also right of expression although I differ with them. As long as they do not break law and resort to coercion and violence, there should be no issue. In this connection, I agree with views of Azam Khan, Samajvadi leader and minister in U.P.
