It is very hard to a conclusion about whether this should be band or should it be left out as it is. May be some more thinking and study is needed in this regard before arriving to any final conclusion...

Oh...so many have confusion in approving it as a profession?

Whether you like or not, prostitution is an oldest profession. This cannot be wished away. By legalizing, it will be possible to regulate the trade, prevent exploitation and promote social justice as well as social security to most neglected sections of society.

Gulshanji, you are right. But this oldest profession came by way of some social issues. That changed now and so this profession should also be discontinued.

Ecven after centuries, there is no real change in any field. Only technology gives alternate products. For example old style pens and ink were replaced by type writers which have again been replaced by computers. The Tawaifs and Muzra dancers, Dev Dasis, Nagar Vadhu have now become call girls. Human instincts, motives, needs all never changed. All that changes is technoilogy.

The link given by me goes to indicate that most women adopted prostitution because this is more paying. Many of them were earlier in low paid jobs. There are fewer cases of forced prostitution. Even those sold to this trade have to blame their own friends, family and not strangers.

There are a whole lot of advantages and disadvantages associated with it but the fact that it won't be a prudent idea to legalize it is often felt by our government also. India is a very vast country and a minor issue results in activities like violence and revolts and under this condition our government not only think twice or thrice before implementing it but even after thousands thoughts they will come to the conclusion of not legalizing it...
I think this is a profession accepted by those who don't look their social status. So nothing to say.

Social status concept changes with time. Once, film career was paying (still paying) but there was no social status. Nobody would allow their children especially girls to enter films. Now parents feel proud to see their daughters on silver screen and TV screen. Nobody could expect artists in films from decent families. So, the film directors had to go to visit brothels for recruiting artists especially female.

Sex workers' profession is definitely a decent one as compared to businessmen who evade taxes and cheat customers, the doctors who sell patients' organs, ministers who cheat people in so many scams etc. any job honestly done is good.

We need not glamorize sex workers trade. They are already not unlawful but only they cannot lawfully advertize. It is necessary to legalize in interest of social justice, social security and ending exploitation by middlemen and police. The exploiters like police and middlemen are more heinous than sex workers.
