It is important to be seen at office parties, even if only for some time. Don't show up and you could be seen as a spoilsport and uptight. Besides, you may miss out on an excellent opportunity to network!
One must always attend every function organized by office or any of the colleague. while in Government service, I attended not only all functions organized by office but also most functions relating to colleagues. I would avoid relatives' but not colleagues. Also even in functions for entertainment, one may feel a bit relaxed but should not break decorum or office discipline.
