Why is a left-handed batsman called a southpaw?

The term 'southpaw' originated in US in connection with baseball pitchers. In US, baseball parks are usually so designed that the batter faces east, so that the afternoon/ evening sun (most baseball matches are played during these hours) does not does not fall on the batter's eyes.

The term 'southpaw' was originally coined by Finley Peter Dunne, and gradually travelled to other sports, and eventually to cricket, where it was used to refer to the batsman and not the bowler
