Bineesh Balakrishnan created new article ROCK GEMS.
Rock music has diversified a lot in the last few decades, & there are far too many genres under rock music currently. So now there are ardent fans of punk rock, alternative rock, rap rock, goth rock, grunge rock & what not!!! I started savouring the various flavours of rock music since the 90s. I've listened to many of the so called 'staple rock songs', which any self avowed rock fan must listen to(songs like-"Smoke on the water ", " Hey Jude", "Smells like teen spirit", " Rock you like a hurricane "). Many claim that the title of 'rock fan/fanatic' is ill fitting, if you don't know 'the great ones/the staple rock songs'!! But in the process of trying out new sub genres of rock music, I discovered many rare gems, songs that are mindblowingly beautiful. This post will see me discussing a few such bodacious songs...
Goddess on a highway by Mercury Rev
Taken off the album 'Deserter's songs', this track is too good to be true. The album was critically acclaimed, but did not match up as far as commercial success was concerned. This track is a true gem, & I'd give it a five star rating on anyday..
If you're thinking of me by Dodgy
Dodgy achieved commercial success in the UK, with this track. But outside of the UK, the response was just lukewarm. I believe it's an underrated song, & is definitely deserving more airplay & downloads..
You by Switchfoot
Being an alternative rock band, Switchfoot hasn't received the kinda attention they deserve. Their most romantic number (according to me), is this killer track, which appeared on the soundtrack of 'A walk to remember'. If you haven't checked it out yet, by all means please do...
The light pours out of me by The Fall
The Fall is a highly underrated band. Ardent fans know that they are one of the best Mancunian rock bands ever(some claim that they're the best band to ever come out of Manchester). This song will definitely give you eargasms... Do try it out..
Gin soaked boy by Divine comedy
Awesome lyrics & a simple song structure make this song an instant earworm. I haven't heard too many Divine comedy songs, but this one's always on my playlist. Love the lyrics-"I'm the why not in the why... I'm the catcher in the rye..."
Pick a part that's new by The Stereophonics
The Stereophonics have a big fan following in UK, but again, they haven't got the acceptance they deserve. I am a die hard fan of the band. If you like this song, do check out-"Just looking ", " Movie star", "Have a nice day"...
Come back to what you know by Embrace
The McNamara brothers are really popular in the UK. Their debut album-'The Goodwill out', was compared to Oasis' mammoth debut 'Definitely maybe'. I loved every single song from the album. My other favorite songs from the album include-'Fireworks', 'Higher sights'... Do check out this band, & thank me later...
Macy's day parade by Green Day
The punk rock giants need no introduction. They have belted out way too many platinum singles & albums. Try this song out, you may not instantly like it, but it will kinda grow on you...
Toothpaste kisses by Maccabees
An Indie rock band with a sizeable fan base, Maccabees recently declared that they are calling it quits. This song is short & simple & uber mushy. Honestly speaking, I haven't checked out any other song by this band, but this one goes on loop on my mp3 player every single freaking day. It will grow on you, trust me, it will..
Love is blind by Mansun
Another British alternative rock giant, Mansun has ruled the radio airwaves in the UK, during the 90s. I listened to this track only about 3 years ago. The track is a genuine eargasm, to say the least. If you're a fan of the band, you must be familiar with other songs by them. Again this song will grow on you, so give it some time...
Where angels fear to tread by Bryan Adams
Now Bryan Adams is one hell of a rockstar, & is remembered for way too many platinum songs. I love this song by him, because of it's BEA-U-TIFUL lyrics. You'll love it too..."Never knew I'd find someone who'd move me, someone who could see right through me.."
Sanwal by Junoon
Junoon went to dizzying heights of stardom with their album 'Azaadi'. Their tracks like 'Sayonee', 'Khudi', 'Yaar Bina' are all cult classics. This beautiful song is guaranteed to give you a 7 minute eargasm. Try it out, you'll luuurrrrvvve it...
These are songs that grew on me, & now they're a part of my regular playlist. Some of them may not suite your tastes. Try them out if you're sick & tired of your usual playlist.....ENJOY...

MG Singh created new article What's in a name as Saif and Hindu wife Kareena name son Taimur.
Tamerlane was the subject of Edgar Allen Poe's poem "Timurlane". He is also the name given to their son by the Muslim star Saif Ali Khan and his Hindu wife Kareena Kapoor. One may ask, what's in a name? Yes, there is nothing much in it except for the fact that Timur or Taimur was one of the most bloodthirsty characters in world history. Parents generally choose any name they like but when a star couple chose the name of a man who devasted the world then it certainly raises eyebrows. In particular, his conquest of Delhi and subsequent bloodbath that is still talked off in awe and fear. This was in 1398 when Timur, with an army of 90000, crossed the country and like tidal wave advanced towards Delhi. The sultanate at Delhi was in disarray as Mohammed bin Tughlak had died and the distant provinces had broken away. The army of Timur consisted only of horse soldiers armed with bows and arrows and curved swords that made for good aerodynamics as they had a low drag coefficient. No one could resist the invading force which swept across the plains of Punjab. Timur entered Delhi and was appalled at the lack of resistance. He was angry and ordered a summary killing of all residents. This act of the warrior defies explanation. Yet he ordered a massacre of the citizens of Delhi. As per some chronicles, Timur had stated that he would only be happy in case blood flowed up to the shoulder of the legs of a horse. This could be an extrapolation later on, but historians have concluded that Taimur did launch a blood bath. Thousands were killed in the streets as the Mongols, on orders of Timur ran berserk.History tells us that Taimur did not stay long in Delhi and soon left. He was 62 years old at that time, having been born in 1336. He looted the city and took 90 elephants and 200 of the most beautiful girls for his harem. The sack of Delhi has no parallel in Indian historyTaimur devastated not only Delhi but vast regions wherever he set foot. One must, however, admire his leadership qualities that led him to conduct military campaigns from Russia to Turkey and Iran in one breath. His was a classic case of the application of principles of war with reference to mobility and offensive action. His campaigns are worth studying by students of military history. Despite this Timur at a conservative estimate executed 17 million men and women. This is only an estimate and it's possible the figure could be inflated but there is no doubt that he carried out mass massacres. In defense of Taimur, one can say that what he did during this age was not confined to him as the law of the land at that time was either to kill or be killed.
Saif and Kareena have chosen a name, but one wonders whether politics is behind this choice because many Muslim stars from Shahrukh to Amir have voiced their opposition to the present dispensation in Delhi led by Narendra Modi. if this is indeed true then it will be a sad day for India as a whole.

Bineesh Balakrishnan created new article BEATLEMANIA.
The Beatles are undoubtedly the most popular rock band of all times... They took rock music to heights that could never be scaled by their contemporaries. This article tries to tap into the feeling of Beatlemania which was the buzz of the 60s....
When the Beatles first auditioned, they were not offered a record deal, & were advised to stop trying as 'the world was not looking for such a four piece'!! But eventually 'the Fab Four' did make music, & their records sold out like hot cake. John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, & George Harrison eventually went onto write epic songs & followed it up with mindblowing live performances. Their songs were contagious, so to speak, & gave them worldwide acceptance & fame. Every genre of Rock music that now exists was in one way or the other influenced by the Beatles.
The crowds went delirious with each hit spurned out by this quartet, & album sales by this band soared all over the world. The Beatles' songs were of all kinds- love ballads, feel good numbers, philosophical gems & what not!! In a short span of 8 years, the Beatles achieved a level of fame that no band has been able to surpass till now!!
Most of the Beatles' songs were written by John Lennon & Paul Mc Cartney.... Their songs were exceptionally well structured & were real earworms. Their live performances were the most sought after, in the 60s. Though most of the live sets by this band was only around 30 minutes long, they earned more than their contemporary bands. Fans thronged concert venues just to get a glimpse of the Fab Four!! The Beatles toured heavily, & all concert tickets were sold out in hours. With an evergrowing fan base, this phenomenon, later termed Beatlemania engulfed the whole world!! What followed was interviews, documentaries, more offers for live performances & all the other joys of superstardom. The main rivals of the Beatles were the Rolling Stones & the Kinks, who did churn out a few hits, but couldn't come on par to the Beatles, either in album sales or fan following.
Though every album by The Beatles was a gem in itself, the best albums, according to most critics are-'Revolver','The White Album/Abbey Road' & 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'.....'Revolver' was voted by Rolling Stone magazine as the best album of the 20th century. 'The White Album' is one of the highest selling albums of all time. The cover work of this album( The White Album) is also voted as one of the best ever. 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' is a landmark album in rock history. Many bands have since tried to emulate the perfection of this album(& some like Pink Floyd who came out with 'Dark side of the moon' have succeeded too).
Listing just a handful of songs by this band wouldn't do justice to them, because this band has belted out way too many hit songs. 'Hey Jude' is one gem of a song, which was voted by Rolling Stone magazine as the best rock song of the 20th century. 'Yesterday' a song about heartbreak is a killer song which was written by McCartney. 'Strawberry fields' is a crowd favorite, & is also a song that has been covered, scores of times, by other bands. 'Let it be' is a song that was hugely popular, & was even eventually sung by church choirs (because of the lyrics- "When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me, speaking words of wisdom let it be.."). 'Lucy in the sky with diamonds', is one mother of a song, based actually on a drawing by Lennon's son. 'Hard day's night' was another bodacious rock song, which also appeared on the soundtrack of a movie of the same name, which was based on the life of the Fab Four. 'Yellow submarine' & 'I am the walrus' are really popular songs, again extensively covered by other bands. One of my favorites is a song called 'Not guilty', which was written by George Harrison. George Harrison was the Silent Beatle, who didn't like the limelight all that much & was an ardent follower of the ISKCON movement. For a novice, a compilation of number one songs by The Beatles was released around 2000 & this will give an idea of the talent possessed by this juggernaut.
Beatlemania reached dizzying heights in the 60s & there was once even a situation where 'Beatle breath' was sold for 20$ per container. This was basically the air around the stage that was trapped in plastic containers & then sold. No other band would have achieved this feat. But eventually the Beatles split up & the world saw the Punk Rock revolution picking speed. Lennon, Harrison & McCartney pursued successful solo careers. Though the band slowly faded out of the public eye, their indelible influence in Rock n Roll cannot be denied..

Arunima Singh created new article The Grand Canyon— A mysterious beauty.
When you hear “Grand Canyon”, the word ‘Grand’ stands out. And true to its name, the grandness leaves you breathless. The grandness engulfs the mystery looming around the formation of such a masterpiece of the Nature.
I have visited the canyons thrice during my stay in Phoenix, Arizona. Each time I stood speechless at the newness that it exhibited, experienced the trance, felt the goose bumps. Each time I saw it or even when I close my eyes to cherish the memories, my retina burnt with its grand image.
I stood speechless before the mighty canyon trying to savor the magnificent beauty. The beauty that inexorably drives you to enact things shown in Bollywood movies that seem so stupid at other times but seem appropriate before the canyon- fall on your feet and kiss the ground or shout out loud to hear the echo. The canyon holds its beauty with grace, not flaunting it but adding to the divinity by its innocence and ignorance.
Clicking flashes, chattering people and exuberantly playing children –the park from where tourists see the canyon is always bustling with crowd and life. The canyon stands still with deadly silence, a part of the noisy world but immersed in deadly silence. The silence of canyon and the bustling at park- the two opposite worlds collide and get engulfed in the vastness of the canyon separating the two.
I get a goose bump when I think of the noisy event which gave rise to the masterpiece. The most accepted but equally debate theory looming behind the formation of canyon is that the massive Colorado River carved these canyons. Looking at the stillness of the canyon, it seems improbable that the journey of formation of this silence was a deafening noisy event. The thought of the mighty river carving the canyon….the thought of river’s sheer might horripilate me. Chopper ride takes tourists over the river. It is big but still smaller than what it was before. The river carves its masterpiece and shrinks to tom-tom its creation.
Grand, really ‘Grand’—the first words that comes to the mind at the view of the canyon. And if it was not enough the booklets from the information centre add to the “WOW!”—It will tell you that it stretches 277 miles across northern Arizona. At places it is about 1600 meters deep. It stands taller, bigger and sombre than anything witnessed by humankind.
The canyon was discovered in 1826 and from that time mankind has tried to understand it’s mystery and capture it’s beauty. More than 600 lives have been lost, most of them being photographers trying to seize its beauty at different angles on the photographic film. The canyon seems unaware of such losses.
A dead stillness and silence characterizes it. For me the fact that people and animals inhabited the Canyon seems like a lie. The movie shown at the I-Max theatre nearby tells facts that seem so deceptive. It has been the home and hope of many ancient Indian tribes. They lived and thrived in the Canyons by the Colorado river. The Clovis and Folsum 10,000 years ago, and the Puebloan around 1275 AD. Today, the Havasupai still live in Grand Canyon. The Navajo Indians and Hualapai Nations own land in the Canyon. And Hopi and Zuni are two sacred sites inside the Canyons today..
The silence of Canyon tells stories. It is pregnant with sagas told and untold. The canyon has witnessed history. It has seen death and rise of civilization. It has witnessed geographical marvels, geographical turmoil and miracles. It has stood for more than five million years, stoic and unmoved by the vagaries of time.
It has its feet planted in noisy river and it stands tall reaching the dead stillness of sky…..A part of the world, but stoic and unaware of it…a yogic in the stage of nirvana.

Vishakha Purohit created new article Are you planning to travel? Well, here are five tips to help you.
Travelling, travelling and travelling, for some people, that is what hovers on their mind all the time. Some travel for adventure, some for business purposes or meetings, some for recording documentary of travelling as travel writer and a few to attend events in their lives or other's lives, for example, weddings, engagement, honeymoon, transfer or for job interviews. There are many reasons for why we pursue to travel in our life. Everyone plans to travel places in our lives and let me tell you, for a few people travelling is a huge tough task.
They get confused pondering over the issue of how to start preparations for travelling at some moments. Then, there is a self-doubt feeling regarding, whether we have got everything the way it should be or not. I don't know why you would be next for, although, I have a few tips regarding travelling to reduce self-doubt while preparing to travel. I know you can find many articles telling you how to prepare for travelling so what is so special about this article. Well, the answer is nothing very special about this article honestly, but I would share how I prepare for travelling and my experience might help you in a certain way I guess.
These are the ways how I prepare for travelling, firstly, I plan the travelling destination or where I am going to travel. For a few occasions like weddings, I don't have to plan this as the place of wedding is usually fixed, but if I am travelling for adventure or luxury to explore new places then I choose two or three places to visit or at times only one to travel to.
Secondly, I make a budget for travelling and I decide how much money I want to spend for travelling. I decide the days and dates for going from and coming back to home and the total number of days I want to visit different places.
Thirdly, I research for the tourist places in selected city, country or region, for example, any famous temples, museum, waterfalls, beaches, palaces, forts, any famous historical monument and wildlife reserves. I make a list of tourist places where I would like to visit. Select a few places from the list that are really popular and can not be missed out while visiting the city. I check for the amount entry fees for each and every place.
Fourthly, I search for hotels, restaurants, taxi or cabs and any special shopping markets and their price or rates. I decide which ones are suitable for me while travelling. I select the hotels, restaurants and taxi or cabs with keeping in mind regarding the budget I planned for the trip.
Fifthly, I book tickets for bus or train or airplane according to my budget for the selected days of travelling. I pack for bag or suitcase, which ever, suits my needs. While travelling through airplane, there is a maximum weight of bag we can carry, presently, the maximum weight for airplane is 15 Kg.
I conclude saying that enjoy your travelling and have fun. Have a nice journey if you are planning to travel soon.

MG Singh created new article Double Life of a US Army General:The Army cant be Proud of it.
Sex is a driving force and as per the theories of Hegel and Kant the driving force in a man's life. The philosophers also identified power as another driving force but added a rider that sex flowed from power. Sex and power is a heady cocktail and many succumb to it. It requires great acumen to balance the two and many fails at the altar of life.
A case of General David Haight has just emerged and if one goes through the sordid details, it looks more and more like hamlets tale where all including the US army are losers. First, who is General Douglas Haight? He is the senior officer at EURCOM in Europe and responsible for operations in Iraq and Syria. It is an important appointment and very sensitive as well, as it encompasses operations of a secret nature. The general was a one-star general which in India is known as Major General and the US army classifies the appointment as Brigadier General.
Checkered Career
General Haight had a checkered career in the armed forces and had an excellent record. He had served in the Rangers and Special Forces and had seen action in Afghanistan and Iraq. The entire tale unfolded when the general was posted in Iraq almost 11 years back.
The general was thought of highly by his superiors and there was every chance that he would be promoted to a two or three or even a 4-star general. The general also held a most sensitive appointment in EUROCOM which is essentially part of the US military think tank to face Russia, of whom the West and Russia are mortally scared. At that time he was a Lt Colonel.
Love and sex
Haight at that time entered into an email club with opposite sex and one email attracted his attention. He followed up and met a lady named Jennifer Armstrong (aged 38 at that time). Both hit it off at the meeting and went into a relationship. Jennifer was a government servant and she also fell the whole hog for the general. The general went into this relationship though he was married and had 4 children. He promised the lady that he would live with her after he retired from the army.
The general started a relationship with Jennifer and it was one long passionate affair. He would use his official phone to talk to her and would also send her emails from his official computer thus compromising security
The Russian intelligence which follows the emails and mobile conversations of senior American generals could not have been unaware of the acts of the general.
While on a visit to the USA, the general and Jennifer decided that their sex relationship needed a fillip and so they began to enroll in sex swap clubs and one-night stand in clubs. Here the duo picked up partners of both sexes and had swingers parties at home as they shared sex partners. It was a sordid affair, but the general and his girlfriend thought they were discreet and nobody would know. THEY CONTINUED THEIR ESCAPADES AND ONCE WHEN HE WAS AT THE WAR COLLEGE IN BALTIMORE THEY ATTENDED SWAP PARTIES AT a club located close to the War College. The general was almost recognized at many places and some anonymous letters were sent to the army headquarters and the Pentagon. The army took cognizance of these letters and started an internal inquiry that was headed by the Inspector General. The investigation revealed the affair of Haight with Jennifer. It also brought out the swinger and swap parties and the Pentagon realized that General David Haight was a security risk. for his actions. But matters could not be allowed to rest as a serious breach of security had taken place and the Army brought
for his actions. But matters could not be allowed to rest as a serious breach of security had taken place and the Army brought in a section of the act that talk of “Acts prejudicial to good order and discipline". They were not sure that David Haight may not have been blackmailed. In any case, it was a serious offense by a serving and serving general in a senior appointment and there was no choice but to remove Haight from command.
Action
Haight was removed from EUROCOM command in May 2016, but the transfer was not publicized. He was sent back to the USA and a board of inquiry constituted to take action against him. The general was reprimanded and was told his army career was over. Thus a man who could have been a two or 3-star general spoiled his copybook with a sexual liaison. The power of sex can be terrible.
The board will also decide on his pension and if it decides to demote him to Lt Colonel he could lose thousands of dollars as pension money every year. This is the least the army could do, but it has left the US army chastised and wondering what to do. People who are interested to read more can read the US army Stars and Stripes newspaper of 26 Aug 2016.

MG Singh created new article Sex and the Armed Forces.
When the Soviet army advanced against the Germans in the Second World War, Marshal Josef Broz Tito the Yugoslav leader complained to Stalin that the Russian army was raping and keeping many girls for sexual pleasure in its bunkers. Stalin had reportedly said that a soldier in the heat of battle must be given some leeway to "Fool" around with some girls. This about sums up the approach of the army towards women.
In my time in the armed forces, numerous incidents came where soldiers and officers had raped. There is now another phenomenon that has emerged. With the induction of women in the armed forces even as combatants, many incidents have come to the fore of sexual exploitation of younger girl soldiers and officers. Not all are rapes but in quite a few it's consensual as well, Never the less it is exploitation.
Sexual exploitation
The armed forces, unlike any other service, has a strict hierarchical structure where the superior is almost akin to god and his orders are to be obeyed. In such a situation a girl working under a superior is bound to obey his command. Failure to do this can lead to an offense under the army or AF act classified as " Act Prejudicial to good order and discipline". In the AF Act 1950 Section 65 deals with "crime". This leads to a piquant situation where a younger women combatant could have to obey her senior and work at lonely places with him or under his tutelage even at a base. This leads to love and sex and though many times it is consensual, yet in 60% of the cases, it is exploitation. We had the famous case of Captain Anjali of the Indian army committing suicide as she loved a group captain and he was double her age and married her with a son older than her. Yet the poor girl unable to marry the senior officer hung herself in Bhopal.
Women in history have always been part of the army. When the Roman legions marched they took with them many women as camp followers whose sole purpose was to gratify the carnal desire of the soldiers. this never changed throughout history and in World war II the Imperial army recruited " comfort women" to assuage the heat of battle for their soldiers. This was wrong and after the war, many lawsuits were filed and the Japanese government did pay compensation to the women mostly from Korea who was used as comfort women.
Last year the US army has paid compensation in Hawaii to civilian women who worked with the US army and were sexually exploited. Obviously, the army would not have paid if there was no smoke. Thus one can say that this sexual exploitation is universal.
Moral dilemma
Is this exploitation wrong or right? If one goes by the moral code one can safely say it is wrong, but again it is a phenomenon that is ongoing for over 3000 years. No army marched without women or capturing women as "war booty". In ancient times there was no law against it and warriors like Taimur and Chenghiz Khan followed their own rules which said:" women are war booty and fair game". Sadly it continued in WWII which is not far back. With the advent of modern jurisprudence and the principle of natural justice as well as women's rights the laws have been framed to make offenses against women a crime. A soldier committing an act of rape against civilian girl also cannot be tried under military law and has to be tried only in a civil court. These are the exceptions in the code on " concurrent jurisdiction".
Last word
Despite the passage of such statutes, the offenses against women have not decreased. One, of course, cannot justify such acts but the fact remains that such acts can never end. So long as women have an attraction for men, one can pass any umber of laws but a man in uniform will get the benefit of doubt in such cases of rape or sexual exploitation. I suppose one has to live with it.
