Vinod Kumar Gulati replied to the topic Heated Bihar Polls ..Round 4.
Bihar Election Results! Indeed a lesson to BJP and to the country as well. We do not question here about the intelligence of the voters giving 24.5% to the BJP but the party's management of capitalizing that support could not get the seats as desired. The victory of the Gathbandhan is said to be victory of the social justice. I feel that it is not so. Social justice has been misconstrued in the sense that a person who has been convicted judicially has now become a king maker and the so called social justice has become an embodiment of appeasement of certain groups. Tomorrow, mobocracy can challenge the judicial pronouncements on the ground of the strength he gains through the support of the voters and ultimately the corruption may stand legalized. However, the mandate given would be accepted with all the honours but it gives an opportunity to re-examine the requirement of a wisdom-oriented education system in all ages of the citizens of the State and the country so that true socialism be brought about at the earliest before further deepening of the divisions in the name of the social justice. All the citizens have equal rights in every sphere of life!

MG Singh created new article The Farce of Returning National Awards; An Orchestrated Event?.
Last Saturday I was at the Singapore Club( I am on an official visit ) and had an animated discussion with an old friend, a member of the service fraternity, an English Major settled in Singapore.
Over glasses of beer the Major mentioned that many writers and poets were returning the awards bestowed on them by the Indian government, on the plea that with Narendra Modi at the helm of affairs, intolerance had crept in the Indian society. He wondered what was the motive as he could not recollect a single instance over a 100 years where an award bestowed on an individual for excellence was returned in England. I asked him as to what he felt about all these incidents. He had a crisp answer and clearly articulated" Man, this is an orchestrated demand and these men do not have the honor of the Indian nation in mind".
This is the opinion of a foreignor, who is not attached to any political party or system in India. I began a look at history and could not find a single instance of an award being returned in any country. The fact is the writers and so called men of letters did a great disservice to India by returning awards, bestowed on them.
I further had a look at some of the awardees and was shocked at what came before me. Take the case of Ms Leela Samson. At one time she headed 3 prestigious centres of creative art simultaneously- Kalakshetra Foundation, Sangeet Natak Akademi and Central Board of Film Certification. She was evicted from all these 3 appointments one by one and had an axe to grind. She was a protege of the Congress party.
Before I write anything further I will quote Kerala's renowned lady litterateur P Valsala who commented that the awards were returned by those who bought them and there is big politics behind this drama.
I am also reminded of watching the Urdu poet Munnawar Rana holding a blank cheque before the TV camera and grandly announcing that he was "ready" to return the monetary benefit that came with the reward. I ask, is this the way to return a monetary benefit? why could not this man just post the cheque to the Sahitiya Kala Akademi? This man also announced that he was ashamed to go to Pakistan after the killing of a Muslim in Dadri in UP. I wonder whether Rana felt any sense of shame when Hindus who came on a visit to India refused to go back to Pakistan as they felt insecure and scared? Obviously not as Rana was playing a game with his political masters in the back.
The fact is that all the awardees who have returned the awards have not returned the monetary compensation that came with the award. This shows the hollow nature of the protest movement and is a clear sign that all this is just smoke and there is an invisible hand behind this entire drama of returning awards.
Take the case of Ganesh Devy, who returned his Sahitya Akademi award. This man recieved funds to the tune of 12 crores of which the Ford foundation played a big part. After the government tightened the screws on these foundations Devy woke up to "intolerence" in Indian society after the BJP came to power.
The real reason for returning the awards is something else and not the so called intolerance seen by them. Look at the film Industry, this is completely dominated by the Mafia from Pakistan and Dubai. This was brought out by RN Singh yesterday on prime time on the IBN news channel. RN Singh is a senior officer ( now retired ) from the Indian Intelligence Bureau. He mentioned the case of one film superstar who thought it fit to articulate that India was heading towards an intolerant society. A per Singh, this same Super Star was dancing at the party of the Don, Dawood Ibrahim in Dubai after the Mumbai blasts.
What can you expect? The fact is as brought out by Chetan Bhagat in his address at Indore on 3 November that had Modi and Amit Shah been from Doon School, such things like returning of awards would not have happened. In a way, I think Bhagat is correct as the so called men of letters are chagrined that their mentor the Congress party is defeated , nay decimated by a man who is not 'educated' in the classical sense. The Congress party and their ilk have not been able to stomach their complete rout in in the 2014 election, hence resort to drama of returning awards. Prestige of the country be dammed.
I hope readers can see through the entire game. It is a curse of history that Nehru and the Congress ( with blessings of Gandhi) came to power after 1947 and reduced the state to an appeaser of minorities. I have yet to understand how the death of one Muslim and 3 rationalists has prompted these pseudo secular writers to retrn their awards. Not one writer returned any award when 10,000 Sikhs were butchered in Delhi, with the Congress party in power. Reports now suggest that orders for the massacre was given by the highest authority of the Congress party.
Retrning awards is self defeating and this has polarized Indian society, not Narendra Modi. These men are just pseudo secular and have insulted the Indian people by returning the awards. I do believe that there is always light at the end of the tunnel and these men will have to pay for this sin of insulting the Indian nation.

bhuyali saroj created new article modern life got affected through advertising.
Introduction
Advertisement plays an important role today in trade and commerce. Every manufacturer of a product wants to attract the attention of the customers in this way. But it is looked upon with some doubt and dubious concern.
Characteristics of modern age
Advertisements take the best media in broadcasting and television. It has a deep psychological effect on the mind of people. The unscrupulous businessmen try to catch their minds in some outstanding ways. Such a businessman often wants to show that his production is better than that of another.
Effect of advertising today
We are already in twenty-first century. So the choice and culture of the modern people have already been changed. Thus advertising is no doubt affecting our modern life. To a great extent it affects the modern trends and fashions. As it makes our mind to buy a particular commodity it affects also our way of life. As a result some capitalist entrepreneurs can get maximum profit by launching a new product and the small scale industries a new product and the small scale industries become gradually defeated. The proprietors of the small scale industries cannot able to spend handsome amount in advertising their produced commodities. The advertisement has a good aspect also. It makes the customers aware of the various commodities which are being launched in the market. So they can make themselves conscious as to what production they should buy. But in most cases customers are cheated by the colouring of the advertisement of a bad commodity.
Conclusion
Yet, we can never deny the facts that with the advance of technology, each and every commodity are being advertised with the tendency to popularize trade and commerce. Now we do not remain in the oblivion of darkness. We can know what commodities are available in market and what are really good to use. Thus it certainly affects people’s attitude and ultimately their manner of working. So ultimately it helps us to develop our life-style and standard of living.

bhuyali saroj created new article advantage and disadvantage of being young .
Introduction
As there are many stages in life so life can be divided into several stages. Adolescent period is one of them. It comes after childhood. It is very significant period of our life. It has different characteristics of its own and the movement of life depends greatly on it. The period can be regarded as the most complex stage of our life.
Characteristics of adolescent period
It is generally said that the youthful stage is in want of wisdom. It lacks experience and makes a boy fickle without having consistency and rigidity of life. The boys and girls of this stage often do something thoughtlessly. So they are often ridiculed and criticized by the elders. On the contrary the adolescents also try sometimes to criticize the experienced, cautious, thoughtful, grey-haired people by saying that they have lost their physical and mental strength to do anything like them.
Advantage of adolescent period
But such a stage is a stage of strength also. The boys and girls are always very eager and energetic to have something. So they always struggle and take risks. They do not know what fear is. They even do not feel hesitate to sacrifice their own lives. So, we can find the patriots who had dedicated their lives to save their motherland even in their early age. Though they do not want to shape their activities according to the pattern laid down by their elders, they dream of a new kind of life of their own, so if one was to obey the instructions of the elders, life would indeed be a dismal affair. Most of youth move for his/her greediness. But they must acquire the virtue of conquering them.
Disadvantage of adolescent period
Sometimes it is said that youth and old age are in fact a matter of one’s attitude towards life. A youth may lead his life like an old man. Again an old man can also lead his life like a youth. In some cases it is right. But it is exceptional. In most cases, people behave naturally according to their respective age for each and every stage has its own features. In case of Pundit Nehru it is notable. He was more active, sincere, energetic and spirited even at the age of sixty. Mahatma Gandhi was also a man of this kind.
Conclusion
Ultimately we are to sum up that the world is for the youth. This period can simply change the shape of the world through their valiant deeds. They never present themselves as grumblers and burdens on society. They appear as a symbol of absolute novelty. They bring strength in their hearts to make the society colourful and carry iron-determination in their minds to sacrifice their valuable lives to do something good and favourable for the society.

bhuyali saroj created new article animals used in public and street performance.
Introduction
People generally want to satisfy their interests in various ways. They often lack scientific understanding as to their ways selected as the means of fulfilment of their desires. Public and street performances using different animals are the notable instances of them. It becomes an absolutely novel way for their amusement and entertainment.
Modern trend of amusement and entertainment
A number of people earn a living out of these performances. We often come across men who carry monkeys with them and they frequently begin to show ring-games with them. Children and even elders gather on a street and find excessive delight out of such games. Not only that but also some other animals such as bears, snakes etc. now arises a relevant question whether it is right or wrong.
Benefit of street and public performances using animals
We know that such animals are natural beasts having wild behaviour. They like to live freely in nature. But the favourable point is that such beastly animals are tamed and get rid of their wild behaviour. It is a good sign. In this way they lose their savagery and ferocity and become no longer dangerous to the human being. Moreover people can enjoy their performance. Besides, it is a source of regular income to their owners. In turn, such animals are fed and well-cared by their owners so that they can continue their performances.
Negative sides
On the other hand, it has another picture also. A famous proverb is that the wilds are beautiful in nature just as the child is in his mother’s lap. So they are to be freed from their owners. According to ecology they are able to get their food by their own efforts. Most of the animals are treated harshly and cruelly by their owners. They are no well-fed and well-cared. But they have to perform continuously. Thus the charm and beauty of nature are hampered in this way. Sometimes it is also found that the new-born animals are taken away from their mothers so that they can be well-trained at an early stage. So such a separation is very cruel indeed. Besides, when the animals get injured or become ill they are not taken to veterinary doctors by their owners. They think that it is just the waste of money and time. As a result they die without care. So it is a great loss of our society.
Conclusion
Finally we can say that even though it is a way of amusement and entertainment and a source of regular income it should be stopped altogether. And for the purpose our government should be conscious and should take necessary steps immediately. Don’t think or wait for the government decision just take the first step and let’s fight for the innocent animals who cannot even communicate with us. Let us save them and show them that humanity is there in this bad world.

Suguna Rajaraman created new article Children and Vitamin D Deficiency .
Taking fifteen minutes of sunbathing in the morning is good for the health of your children. It is very much recommended by almost all doctors for vitamin D synthesis, related to calcium absorption and, therefore, the strengthening of your baby’s bones. When you leave the house, you can go for a walk with your baby either on the court or even in the garden. But if you are too slow to walk with your child, better keep an eye on recent findings of the researchers.
Two studies that have just come out, conducted by a children's hospital and a medical school in USA show that children deficient in vitamin D are more likely to get sick and spend more time in hospitals than those who had normal nutrient levels. Both results are published in the journal of pediatrics.
The researchers have assessed the amount of vitamin D in about five hundred children between the ages of five and nine, admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of a children's hospital, over a period of twelve months. They found that two in five children, that is about 40% were deficient in vitamin D and the lowest rates were related to low immunity and more serious illnesses.
In the second study, the researchers analyzed about three hundred children and adolescents between the ages of eleven and fifteen admitted in the hospital seriously ill. In this group of children, almost 70% of children were found to be poor in vitamin D and the rates were associated with longer stays in the hospital and more serious illnesses. In both studies, vitamin D deficiency was more common than has been reported in healthy children and adolescents.
The patterns of vitamin D consumption used in the study are recommendations of the academy of pediatrics. It proposes the daily intake of 400 international units of vitamin D per day. The researchers said that the link between vitamin D deficiency and the children who fell sick is not yet clear and therefore, it is not possible to establish a relationship of cause and effect.
About consumption of vitamin D:
A vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children and osteoporosis and osteopenia in adults. What is more, every day, there are studies that indicate the role of this substance in the prevention of diseases, such as diabetes and coronary artery disease, for example. Therefore, it is better to learn the care needed to maintain adequate vitamin D levels in children and protect from diseases.
How much vitamin D should be consumed per day?
According to researchers, vitamin D intake should comply with the following amount: Young children in the age group of 1 to13 years should consume 10 mcg a day. Boys and men in the age group of 13 to 50 years should consume 5 to 10 mcg a day. Men in the age group of 51-70 years should consume 15 mcg a day. Girls and women in the age group of 13-50 years should consume 5 mcg a day and women in the age group of 51-70 years should consume 10 mcg a day.
The kinds of food that are abundant vitamin D:
Yogurt, butter, whole milk, cod liver oil, egg yolks, sardines and herring, fish such as tuna are all good sources of vitamin D. This vitamin is present in fatty foods, so it is better to take care of the quantities of consumption, as per nutrition specialists.
The time of exposure to the sun is required for production of vitamin:
Exposure to the sun is important, so that the body can absorb the vitamin D you consume. In the case of adults, exposure to the sun is recommended, at least, three times a week for a period of about 15 to 30 minutes. The best time for this exposure to the sun is until 10 am in the morning. Children must spend up to ten minutes under the sun, and a baby of six months of age, cannot use sunscreen. It is because, the baby's skin is too sensitive to receive this type of product.
Cases in which supplements are necessary:
The blood test will indicate when there is a need for supplement. If the vitamin D levels are below thirty nanograms per decilitre, it can be increased using supplements.
Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium:
The daily recommended dose or quantities of the nutrient are 1200 to 1500 mg per day for children and 1000 to 1500 mg per day for adults. The milk and milk products are the best sources of the mineral. At the same time, quinoa and salmon, sardines, soybeans, sesame seed and dark green leaves are also good sources of calcium as per nutritionists. 786

MG Singh created new article ManMohan Singh and his role in Supression of Evidence of Death of Bose.
ManMohan Singh was prime minister of India for 10 years. This is a pretty long period in the history of a nation and ManMohan Singh held fort as the "leader" of the Indian people for a decade from 2004-1014. Unfortunately the only legacy he seems to have left behind is articulated as" running dog". This is a phrase from China and refers to a man who has no independence and is entirely subseverient to a family or organization. In case of ManMohan Singh one can say he was 'The running dog of the Nehru Gandhi family". All this can be condoned, but his approach in suppressing information regarding the death of Bose is an unpardonable act, that needs scrutiny.
One will recollect that in 1998, the BJP government headed by AB Vajpayee set up a commission under Justice Mukherjee to inquire into the death of Subhas Chandra Bose. This was based on the general feeling that Bose did not die in the aircrash in Formosa in 1945, but used it as a smokescreen to escape being tried as a war criminal by the Allies. It is worth pointing out that Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah had given their assent to Great Briton to try Bose in case he was captured.
All sorts of rumors were floating around. Some claimed they had evidence that he escaped to Russia and some claimed that he had turned a sadhu and was a resident of Faizabad.
Justice Mukherjee did a thorough job and concluded that Bose did not die in the aircrash. He cited irrefutable evidence of this. Justice Mukherjee also visited Russia and was startled with the information that was revealed to him there. He was told in Moscow that secret KGB files did mention Bose and these could be made available to India in case the Indian prime minister made a request to his Russian counterpart.
The commission submitted its report in 2004. By this time the BJP led government was history and ManMohan Singh was the prime minister. Justice Mukherjee met ManMohan Singh and requested him to approach the Russian government. However Singh did nothing, but rejected the findings of the Mukherjee commission. He refused to write or make a request to the Russian government. It must be pointed out, that at that time the communist state had collapsed and the new Russian government was keen to help out.
ManMohan Singhs action is in sharp contrast to the approach of Narendra Modi the present prime minister. Not only a request has been made to the Russian government to open the KGB files, but he has also agreeed to de-classify the files of the Central Goverment regarding the death of Bose.
The facts will be out soon and there is every chance that they will reveal that Bose did escape to Russia. Facts will also reveal whether Nehru had a hand in his imprisonment in Siberia. There are reports that Stalin kept him in a prison in Siberia and Nehru was well aware of the facts. This could be one of the reasons that prompted Man Mohan Singh a Nehru- Gandhi loyalist not to open and solve the mystery of the death of Bose. It must be mentioned that Bose was the tallest leader of the Indian freedom movement who in the 1938 session of the Congrss party defeated the nominee of Gandhi to the post of Congress President. Nehru had every reason to fear the return of Bose.
It's sad that ManMohan Singh did something that cannot be condoned. He put the clock back by a decade, but truth will be out and maybe Nehru will stand as a criminal in the dock of Indian histry.

Lopamudra created new article Effective Learning.
Students today are burdened with a heavy curriculum and cut throat competition at every step of the way. To keep up with the pressure they start with tuition and coaching quite early in life, which is basically another set of reference books, notes and suggestions, many a times differing from what is taught in their formal classrooms. Students end up with confusion and tension further leading to sleepless nights and ultimately an average result. The reason is lack of clarity, proper guidance and disorganized learning. While there is no clear cut formula to do well in studies, being calm, methodical and sincere goes a long way. Here I’m trying to pen down a few methods which more often than not have proved effective.
1. Relax- The most important thing is to have a relaxed mind before you start studying.’ Early to bed and early to rise’ is the best formula to get up fresh in the morning. Early morning is a goods time to study because at that time you are relaxed and your mind is very alert and receptive. One must make good use of this time. However, some people prefer studying late at night because it is quiet and distractions are less, which is okay but in that case do not attempt to get up early. Being awake till late at night and then getting up early is actually not helpful because if the 8 hour sleep is not complete your brain is not in a position to acquire much information from whatever book you are reading. Recreation, sports, exercises and walks also help relax the mind.
2. Concentrate- Study with total concentration. It is more effective to study for a short while with full concentration as compared to spending a long time in front of the book with mind wavering from time to time to other things. In fact it is better to take a break in when one is unable to concentrate and come back when feeling fresh. It is known that Swami Vivekananda used to read up massive books in hours and remember every detail given in it because he read with total concentration. Meditation helps one focus. It is a good idea for students to meditate for 20 minutes before going to bed. It also helps calm you.
3. Inquire- When studying, pick up one topic and try understanding it completely. Ask questions. We have seen in small children that they are in awe of the world ‘Why’ is something they ask for every little thing coming their way. Bring that on. Don’t learn anything mechanically or don’t believe anything without understanding. Ask your teachers (which includes anyone who is willing to guide you) for explanation to theories, laws, formulae or even a story in literature. Question till you understand completely. Take help of whatever aids you get, like real specimen, models, pictures or books. Science is based on proof, so, ask for it, do the experiments, go to laboratories, make use of libraries. Once we understand something, it is much easier to learn and remember not just for exams but for life.
4. Summarize first and then Elaborate- Get the gist or the essence of the topic, especially if you are referring to many books. It is important to make a summary and note down what is required or what is important. Apart from helping you learn, it comes in handy during Exams when we have time only for revision. Highlighting the key words and writing points in the notes also help recall details. From the key words elaborate in your own words. This clears the concept.
5. Use Mnemonics-Certain things need to be memorized, be it the names of cranial nerves in Biology, the first twenty elements of the Periodic table in Chemistry or various formulae in Maths and Science. Use of Mnemonic devices is a good way to memorize a sequence. Mnemonics are easy to remember sentences or pictures which can be used to learn the difficult words of curriculum. To quote an example, you would find it difficult to remember the sequence of the cranial nerves as Olfactory, Optic, Occulomotor, Trochlear, Trigeminal, Abducens,Facial, Auditory, Glossopharingeal, Vagus , Accessory, Hypoglossal in that order but it would be easy for you to remember- On Occasions, Our Trusted Truck Acts Funny, A Great Vehicle Any How . Since the first letters of the two sets of words are same, it will be easy for you to replace the second set with the first one and get the correct order if you know the nerves. There are some well known Mnemonics used since ages but they can also be made up by students the way they want.
6. Write- Written practice has proved helpful time and again in learning and remembering. Mathematics has no other alternative but to go for written practice. I believe it works in other subjects too. Frame questions from the lessons in addition to what is given in your text book Exercises and write notes.
7. Make it a continuous process- Learning should not be kept for the examination time. It should be done every day. This way the syllabus does not pile up and one is not at a loss just before the exams. It is not important to put in a lot of hours. Even if you put in just one or two hours, make sure you do it whole heartedly. “I’ll do it tomorrow” attitude is addictive. So, try avoiding it unless absolutely necessary.
8. Set a target – This is actually continuation of the previous point but I’m separating the two in order to emphasize on the importance of planning. Allot a study time and decide how much you plan to learn. This can be done on a weekly basis. Keep other commitments in mind while planning. Doing on monthly basis many a times upsets plans due to various reasons like sudden outings, visitors and so on. Decide at the beginning of the week how much of your syllabus you intend to complete in the coming week. Do it seriously and try to achieve the target you have set. Go by what your school/college is teaching at a point of time. That way you will not be lagging behind. For junior classes, I feel it is enough if students just come home every day and revise, learn, understand what has been done in school that day.
Effective learning and effective teaching are interrelated in ways more than one. It is the duty of the parents and teachers to guide their children to be systematic in their approach. Every student is different and need to be guided accordingly. The idea is to get the best out of them based on their aptitude without getting them bogged down or hassled. While it is okay to be a little worried before the exams because that pushes one to study, losing sleep over it or getting over-stressed leads to ‘Test anxiety’ and interferes with the performance a great deal. Our children can give their best only if we understand them and support them based on their needs and abilities.

vijay created new article Lewis Turning Point Forces China Scrap One-Child Policy.
China has just announced the roll back of its more than three decades long one-child policy. This policy helped China to control its population - the world's largest . It is reported to have prevented the birth of millions of babies. However with the scrapping of the one-child policy now every year 3 to 6 million extra babies can take birth.
The Communist bosses of China have now permitted every Chinese family to have two children. The earlier policy was stressful to couples who wanted more than one child or the first one was a girl. The replacement ratio of population had gone down. China was fast turning into an aging country. This was and would affect its working population adversely affecting the industrial productivity in the long run.
With a stagnant economy showing signs of shrinkage China could ill afford an aging population which would have depleted the labour supply. Reducing labour availability would result in increasing labour wages and this would seriously dent the comparative advantage that China has versus other countries. Its cheap manufacturing industries would lose its edge in the international market adversely affecting exports, which are contributing nearly 40% to its GDP.
One-child policy meant that China would start feeling shortage of young manpower from third and fourth generation on wards after it was implemented. When a couple has only one child it means for every two couples only one couple replaces them in the second generation and further reduction takes place in the third generation. At this rate two scenarios emerge. The share of aging persons in the population goes up and the share of younger persons goes down. Shrinking labour force means shortage of manpower for existing and incoming industries. The gap will have to be met by importing labour from other countries if economic momentum is to be maintained. This prob;em is being faced by many European countries which are seeing increasing immigration which actually is desired by them to feed their labor market to keep industries and services running.
America realized this many decades ago and has put in place a controlled system of permitting immigration to oil its economic progress. In the process it is able to maintain its economy at a high level and also control influx of immigrants in a legal manner. Another country which has prospered by allowing immigration especially of Asians is Australia which other wise was going to stagnate economically.
China with a huge population obviously would not like to reach a stage where it has to import or allow immigration to run its industries and services. When China was a poor country with an economy of a least developing country in the fifties and sixties of the last century, existing high population and its high growth rate was identified as a main reason coming in way of attaining high economic growth rate. Being a single party and non democratic country they not only introduced one-child policy but also ruthlessly implemented it. However reports indicate there were many who found ways of breaking the rule, which is not important here. However the male female ratio got skewed in favor of the male and finding brides became difficult for increasing number of males in China.
After the failed Cultural revolution and the death of Chairman Mao, China launched itself on the capitalist path of economic growth although the ruling party continued to be Communist. It is so now only in name. Cheap labour and absence of opposition parties saw rapid economic growth over the years. The American industry shifted almost its entire labour intensive manufacturing industries to China and imported its requirements at rock bottom prices. This benefited the american consumer but brought in flood of dollars into China. Soon the world was importing from China. It also attracted global biggies to set up plants in areas of electric, electronics, metals and chemicals and has today become the manufacturing hub of the world in almost all sectors of the economy.
The exports galloped and it exports nearly 40-45% of its production to all countries. The huge earnings boosted its capital formation. China has used these funds to dramatically improve its infrastructure and the skyline of its cities has catapulted it to first world country from a third world country in a period of around three decades or more. China has become the second largest economy and is a superpower challenging USA in high seas.
But its vast population, relatively low per capita incomes compared to USA, low wages and high volume manufacturing capacities are now exerting a pressure on its economy. Chinese do not enjoy democratic freedoms but have perhaps kept quiet because of the high growth rates the Communist rulers have been able to sustain since many years now. However with signs of slowdown in the economy, shrinking growth rates and an aggressive neighbour like India opening up its economy by its Make in India programs, the Chinese have also been hit by a phenomena known as Lewis Turning Point,
It states that in a developing country the labour force is primarily engaged in the agricultural sector. As the economy develops and becomes market-oriented the industrial production sector attracts increasing labour from the agricultural sector. The growth of the economy is driven by the unlimited supplies of labour, mainly drawn from the agricultural sector. This migrant force willingly accepts low wages corresponding to the living standards prevalent in the farm sector.
The developing modern sector also known as the capitalist sector is able to harvest profits due to the low labour costs and generate savings. These savings act as capital formation for expansion. However this can not go on indefinitely. As the economy rapidly develops a point is reached when no more labour is coming from the underdeveloped or agricultural sector. This causes wages to rise. This is known as the Lewis Turning Point.
China has grown in the last three decades due to the abundant cheap labor it gets from the vast hinterland for its predominantly coastal industries. But due to many reasons and one of them being the one-child policy the amount of surplus labour has decreased as the demography has undergone changes. Economists are of the view that China has perhaps reached the Lewis Turning Point.
The Chinese labor are resorting to strikes and industry is facing labour shortages. Wages are forced to be raised in the last two years. This is affecting the ability of China to continue to be a low cost supplier of goods in the export markets. Recently they tried devaluing the currency to offset some of the increase.
Therefore China has taken a decision to scrap the one-child policy to ensure that in the coming years the labour market becomes supply surplus to ensure lower wages and sustain its position as as the number one supplier of the lowest cost goods in the international markets. This is also essential because China has concentrated and invested heavily in export oriented industries. Low wages are not translating into demand for absorbing the surplus export goods in the domestic markets. Domestic demand can be boosted if purchasing power of the population is raised by wage increases. But if that happens production costs go up. So China is presently caught in a economic cycle at the Lewis Turning Point.
In order to move away from the point they have taken a long term decision of scrapping the one-child policy. Let us watch its economy.

vijay created new article Height of Corruption.
Recently I came across a news item stating that due to rising costs the height of the Ravana at Ramlila Ground in New Delhi this year is being reduced from 60-65 feet to around 40-45 feet. In some places they no longer put up Kumbhakarna's figure to save upon costs.
My thoughts went back to two statues in my city which had to be replaced and increased in height from the original when installed. This was a reverse phenomenon than the Ravana figure whose height had to be reduced. Both the statues were installed by the city municipality at public expense. That is where the problem arose.
The first statue was of Maharana Pratap the great warrior of Mewar and a much loved historical figure. It was announced with much fanfare that at a very important and busy crossing, a statue of the king in a standing position, holding his spear and shield would be installed.
Accordingly after a few months at a function the statue was unveiled admist lot of clapping and back slapping. But soon there was disappointment as the statue did not bring out the majesty of the Maharana. his statue looke a bit comical. The spear in his right hand was taller than him. The shield in his left hand covered a portion of his face too. The helmet on the head appeared a bit too big for the statues face.
It soon became a talk of the town and local papers also commented upon it. At the busy crossing many a driver would drive slow to have a longer look at it. Speculation was rife as to what happened. The statue simply did not do justice to the impressive figure of the Maharana and photographs of statues in some other cities were made available by local papers. The statue suffered terribly in comparison.
In the college I passed out from in Rajasthan, there was a museum, which had a room in which a life size statue of the Maharana was installed in full battle gear along with his spear, shield, helmet with chains protecting his face, These were supposed to be original and belonged to Maharana. It was a very impressive statue which was very uplifting to look at.
Therefore the pygmy statue of the Maharana on a pedestal of around 15 feet high, in fact made a mockery of the great historical figure. Soon there was a public uproar and protests followed. As usual the municipality took its own sweet time to respond.
Almost around the same time another statue was installed at another part of the city by the side of a not very busy road. The statue was of Netaji Subash Chandra Bose the legendary freedom fighter. The statue depicted Netaji in his famous pose in a marching position. However it also soon met the reaction similar to the above statue. The height if the statue was hardly three to four feet and it made Netaji look like a dwarf. I happened to pass by that road at least twice a day and developed a silent sympathy for Netaji being depicted in such a pygmy statue.
Both these dwarf statues created a sense of resentment in the city population. In fact some miscreants stole the spear from the statue of Maharana making it look still more comical. After a long period the city fathers grandly announced that both the statues will be replaced by new statues befitting their stature. It helped sooth the resentment among the citizens.
After a few months both the statues were replace with new statues. Proper care was taken to see that they were of appropriate height and looked as near to the real heroes. The citizens were satisfied and both the statues are today standing majestically at their original places.
There were lot of speculations as to why the original statues were not of proper height. After discounting the many theories, it was agreed by almost all that corruption was responsible for the shortening of the heights. It may look comical but it sounds logical. Especially because no other reason has been provided till date.
As happens most of the time, after awarding contracts the contractors are expected to return a certain amount to the contract value to the department officials in whose jurisdiction the contract is awarded. Generally the contract value is inflated to take this payment into account. Everyone gets their share and the quality of work also may not suffer for want of funds.
But what happens when a provision has not been kept for it and the contract gets awarded. No one wants to forgo their share. The beneficiary of the contract has to accommodate somehow. Usually he cuts corners in the job which anyway the same officials will be approving. Having got their cut they willingly approve the below performance job. everyone is happy.
So why did both the statues lose their heights so liberally?
Now in case of a statute how does its maker accommodate the demands of the order givers? He can do so only by cutting either the height or the girth of the full size statue. As the demand grows the more reduction he has to do in these vital statistics of a figure. That is what made both Maharana Pratap and Netaji's statues lose at first inches and then feet to finally emerge as pygmy statues. The officials had no option but to approve them and get them installed. When have they bothered about public resentment.
Whether the above is true or not can not be ascertained otherwise how could the commissioned life size statues result into almost half the size. How can such mistake occur not once but twice. Almost everyone is convinced that this was the reason why the original statues became laughably short in height.

vijay created new article Who Owns the World's Wealth.
In 2000 it was reported in a UN report that the richest 1% of adults in the world are the owners of 40% of the global wealth. The US , Europe and Japan accounted for most of the extremely wealthy individuals. US and Japan had between them nearly 60% wealthiest adults of the world. In a 2014 study by a Swiss Bank the richest 1% had increased their ownership to nearly 48% of the global wealth. In contrast the bottom half of the world population owned only 1% of the total wealth.
The Bank calculated the global wealth to be a new record at $263 trillion in 2014 as against $117 trillion in 2000. In fourteen years the wealth had more than doubled. Nearly one million people rose to become millionaires in 2014, the slowest in recent years.
The regions of North America and Asia-Pacific saw better economic growth in 2014 compared to Latin America and Europe. North america registered high growth due to strong equity market performance and Asia Pacific due to superior economic performance. However, Latin America saw erosion due to falling commodity prices and it hit Brazil especially hard. Europe continued to register low growth rates around 4%.
Wealth distribution reports generally describe high net worth individuals as those having investable wealth between $1 to $5 million million (HNWI), and those with $30 million and more as ultra HNWI. Those in between are called mid tier millionaires.
Global HNWI numbers grew by 6.7% in 2014 to 14.6 million and their combined wealth rise by 7.2% to $ 56.4 trillion. The rates were nearly half of the growth rates registered in 2013. In absolute terms the Asia-Pacific region is catching up with the once affluent and well established leader North America. In 2014, the combined wealth of HNWI in N. America was $ 16.2 trillion compared to $ 15.8 trillion for Asia-Pacific. The only region that saw its wealth decrease was Latin America by 0.6%.
It is noteworthy that India's performance has been the best in Asia-Pacific region in 2014. As against growth rates of 2% and 4% in 2013 it recorded a growth rate of 26.3% and 28.2% , but on a relatively lower base.in 2014 in HNWI and their wealth respectively. This is due to political stability in a single party majority in Parliament, and creation of a improved business friendly environment. Its ranking improved by five places from 16th in 2013 to 11th in 2014.
In spite of Chinese economy slowing down somewhat it has however continued with a good 17.5% growth rate for HNWI and 19.3% growth rate in HNWI wealth in 2014. Better performance in equity markets and increased exports in 2014 led to this performance.
Together US and China accounted for more than 50% of the global increase in HNWI population during 2014. India and China account for nearly two thirds of the HNWI and nearly fifty percent of the wealth in the Asia-Pacific region, with China predictably having the lion's share. In number of HNWI, China outpaces India by 4.5 times. In 2014 there were 1,98,000 Indian HNWI compared to 8,90,000 Chinese.
However these figures pale when compared with USA which has 43,51,000 HNWI and Japan which has 24,52,000 HNWI's in 2014. Tiny Singapore has 1,04,000 individuals as HNWI. Switzerland has 3,43,000 and Canada has 3,33,000 HNWI. India has just overtaken Netherland (1,90,000) and S. Korea (1,89,000) and should be able to overtake Italy (2,19,000) and Australia (2,26,000) in the near future. Brazil with i,61,000 and Russia with 1,55,000 HNWI's are behind India.
It is estimated that the global HNWI wealth will cross $70 trillion by 2017 at an annual growth rate of 7.7% .
It is important to note that it was the Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWI), those with investable assets of more than $30 million who have acted as the primary growth drivers for the increase in HNWI and their wealth. They constitute only 1% of the HNW individuals but account for nearly 35% of the wealth. Their population grew globally by 8.6% in 2014 bettering the 7.7% rate of growth of mid-tier millionaires. Asia-Pacific region saw the highest growth in UHNWI's (16.5%) followed by North America (10.7%), Specifically India with a growth of 31% and China with 21.6% contributed to the strong Asia-Pacific growth.
It is estimated that in the last 15 years , only four countries have increased their wealth at a higher rate than India which did so by 211%. Indonesia (362%), Chana(341%), Russia (253%) and Australia (248%) are ahead of India. Advanced countries saw moderate rates of growth like Japan (39%), USA (41%) and UK (58%).
India saw its per capita income go upto $2,800 from a modest $900 in 2000 making it the 10th richest country in the world according to total individual private wealth. Indonesia has a per capita income of $6,000 as compared to $1,300 in 2000. On per capita comparison basis India's rank drops to 20th in the world. Both India and Indinesia continue to be poor countries but appear high because of their large populations.
In the top ten growth rate countries the highest per capita income in Switzerland at $2,85,100, followed by Australia at $2,04,000 and at third place is Canada with $1,39,000. China's per capita income is $12,800 and was $2,900 in 2000. per capita income forUS is $1,50,600 and UK is $ 1,47,600.
In India, Pune is where the maximum millionaires growth rate was registered from 2000 to 2014, from 60 to 250 numbers, and it was behind Ho Chi Minh City and Jakarta which had 200 and 1390 millionaires in 2014 respectively in the Asia-Pacific region. The fourth city was Mumbai with 2690 and Hyderabad was fifth with 510 millionaires resp. Delhi has 1350 millionaires up from a figure of 430 in 2000.
It can thus be seen that the Asia -Pacific region is growing at a faster rate than the richer North American region. India and China are the two major growth drivers in this region. China is far ahead of India though population wise both are nearly same. India has much catching up to do and it calls for far greater reforms in its economy and at a much faster rate than at present. The emphasis on increasing India's manufacturing base is in the right direction but China is always going to compete strongly with us. It has a far wider economic base and a huge Foreign Exchange reserve ($3,500 billion) against $355 billion of India. Even if its GDP rate falls marginally it is still on a better footing than India which is operating at a higher rate but on a much smaller base.

Height of corruption!!

vijay created new article Who Owns the World's Wealth.
