Some time back I read one of Iyer's books although my memory is very sketchy now. It was a novel about Cuba and Havana called Cuba and the Night ! Was good...I started another and left it half way through because someone else borrowed the book The Lady and the Monk, have still not got back that book. I tend to compare him to Vikram Seth, very similar writing and narrative styles. His father Raghavan Iyer was also a highly educated and qualified person, also wrote some books on politics and philosophy if I am not mistaken,,

Why do these mostly uneducated and uncultured people need such expensive and swanky homes? Each building to cost Rs. 1 crore, for what purpose? Same thing with other states too! And then these state governments, when it comes to more important fundings, cry that their coffers are empty! Really disgusting!
To a certain extent one can blame the people of the state and the opposition who put up with such nonsense.Same thing was planned in Karnataka but the opposition BJP created such an uproar that they had to stop the idea.. I find it extremely disturbing that the Chief Ministers have the freedom to spend tax payers money as they want without any accountability. This same CM spent a hge amount on a vehicle and now this..
I agree, it is the way that people put up with such nonsense that it later becomes the norm for these politicians. I guess, since after the British left India, there were really only a handful of true leaders who believed that only simplicity and honesty will form a true democracy. But sadly, the others picked up where the former princes and kings left off and as the leaders, claimed all such riches and prosperity for themselves. On the other hand, British who gave the true concept of democracy to the world, their leaders live as simply as the next common man. The former viceroys, after reaching England were seen carrying their own burdens as they no longer could put a claim to any perks that their former positions had afforded. Now, even a mayor of a small town, who may not possess even the most basic of qualifications exercises his claim to a swanky super expensive car, newly refurbished bungalows no lesser than a mansion that come with all the latest trappings. I think it is very much the fact that the common people allow t to happen, the reason for such unnecessary show of wealth amongst politicians.
I totally agree with that, I remember seeing TV footage of Princess Diana carrying her luggage while travelling and John Majors doing household chores like vaccum cleaning and mowing the lawn in their home during weekends. Most of the UK Prime Ministers leave their official residence, 10 Downing road for the weekend and stay in their own homes like other normal people . Can you expect this from even a Police officer or a higher government official here ..

usha manohar replied to the topic The Directive Principles of State Policy contained in Part IV, Articles 36-51 of the Indian constitution. It enjoins the state to enact a uniform civil code. Should this proviso be scrapped?.
On Uniform Civil Code, the manifesto said Art 44 of the Constitution lists Uniform Civil Code (UCC) as one of the directive principles of the state policy. "BJP believes that there cannot be gender equality till such time India adopts a UCC which protects the rights of all women and the BJP reiterates its stand to draft a UCC drawing upon the best traditions and harmonising them with modern times," said the document.
I dont see anything wrong with what they have said, so why is the opposition , the communal parties and its supporters challenging them ? Are they going to oppose something the will be welcomed by the majority of the nation to please a few ..I guess it is the fear that BJP will march over them that makes them keep bringing this issue every now and then...very immature and childish ! They dont seem to realise that there is a time for everything esp now when the parliament has its hands full with all the ghotalas of the previous government coming out, the saffron infested people have to bite their words

Kalyani, there is no denying that the youngsters if today are a very smart lot, also having the advantage of youthful agility on their side. As far as multitasking goes, like you said one cannot do full justice to any one job since you are dividing your attention. I have an uncle working for nescafe of course he is retired now. He did his BSC after joining the company realising that he lacked the required knowledge and qualification and could be left behind ESP when qualified youngsters were joining in. Later he did a course in computer management and finally an MBA, all of this while in service. He reached a very high position before his retirement.
That is really commendable Usha, he took those many efforts so that he could not be left behind. It is this attribute of willingness and ability to adapt quickly to changes is what most in the end, even much more than experience, knowledge and even seniority.
Yes his is an exemplary case and not many would think of educating themselves after marriage, kids and having worked for a considerable number of years. Basically , even the seniors should keep in step with the youngsters and it is not impossible.
True, it is not impossible for anyone, only the will to accept change and adapt accordingly has to be there.
Unless they are willing to do that they will be left behind. Every job comes with its own intricacies and unless you are able to absorb it and better yourself, there is no hope except probably in government service, where reservations, seniority and ones closeness to the authorities concerned are taken as qualifications. Unless that changes, there is little hope because no private sector can compete with public sector.

You cannot fool all for ever.
There are very strong reasons for continuous mud slinging on Congress. Is Triple Talaq not anti Islamic ? BUT why the BJP now in power is reluctant to even talk of this? I repeat that mere criticism of earlier ruling party will not help. Please persuade the ruling party (if you can) to bring suitable legislation in parliament to implement uniform personal law. If they don't do so, it only means that such issues are only for fooling people with a view to get votes. It does not appear that the current ruling alliance has even an intention to bring uniform personal law. any way, this is issue between the current ruling party and the staunch supporters. Others have nothing to do with this. They will enjoy just watching.
I agree with you. Mere criticism of earlier ruling party will not help. My Question is, How it's going to help by criticizing BJP for its inaction. What BJP is going to do or not going to do will be decided by the High command of BJP. A new party has its own priorities depending on the merit of an issue. I do not like mere guessing and jumping to hasty and baseless conclusions, that BJP is reluctant to bring in UCC
