There is no doubt that India has neglected its rural areas, not hat urban areas are better but atleast they get some attention. Our planners have not been upto the mark. See the water logging in our "planned" cities.

vijay replied to the topic Is pakistan paying back India in the same coin for its breakup of Pakistan in Kashmir.
It does not require much brains to understand that Pakistan is smarting under the Indian assistance in its break up. It will try its level best to do the same to India and Kashmir is where it can do so. Much was expected from Modi but so far nothing concrete has taken place. In fact situation is worse. The security advisor may not be upto the mark perhaps. Also only about five districts in Kashmir Valley are affected. The rest of J&K is calm and unaffected. These five districts need to be contained. Martial law is a stupid response to a instigated problem across the border. India should now start paying back Pakistan by supporting and instigating activities in Baluchistan. Trouble is Indian governments are too commerce oriented rather than fighter oriented. That is why Modi is now more commerce oriented as against his fire and spit image during elections. It is a let down.

They say Law is blind. But Law can scent the smell of Currency notes. It can also hear the sound of crisp Currency notes. In such a scenario, who will heed the protests of a poor driver.. And about this truth nobody knows better than the likes of Salman,
Satyameva Jayate should be replaced with" Asatya Meva Jayate ". Law is just a commodity that has a price tag. Those who can afford the price will be declared as innocents. Others will languish in the Jails for years together.

True. People once they are aware of the reality, they themselves will come forward to improve the situation in the villages. A few Villages in my state, in Srikakulm district well known for its backwardness, without looking towards the Government for help, inhabitants built Borewells, toilets and other minimum amenities. Where there is will there is a way.

True...we have already seen the sad, heartrending fate of Ravindra Patil, witness to the Salman hit and run case.

People will be carried away by these Leaders' false claims. Because the Leaders give a rosy picture of rural India. Which is why, Sainath, the man behind the creation of this Web site thought, to display the real picture of Rural India so that reality surfaces. By this people will know how false are the claims of these politicians.
Let us not blame the politicians every time. I agree that life is very hard in rural India, but where there is a will, there is way. If the people themselves change their mindset and work hard, they can change things for better for themselves and their villages. There are numerous such examples, the prominent ones in Ralegan Siddhi, Anna Hazare's village. Another one is Hivare Bazar, where its sarpanch worked hard to bring the change and it is a virtual paradise now. There are many others whose examples can be followed. If the people get together and work together. the politicians have to bend before them.

My tribute to the great writer! Although the least they could have done was give more justice to Premchand's portrait and get it done from a professional artist.

Anil, here is a picture of kokum that I found, a fresh fruit as well as its dry skin. The died skin is called as Amsul in Maharashtra and used for the sour taste in daily cooking.

@ Kalyani, I too use Kokam , we call it punarpuli , since we have trees in my ancestral home. Most of the fruits, are eaten and the skin dried and preserved . You can make sherbet and rassm out of it
Yes Usha, kokum sherbet is a summer favorite. In Maharashtra we make saar from kokum, which is our version of rassam, but sweeter and lighter, Solkadhi which is made with coconut milk and kokum juice to which a dash of garlic and chilly is added. I also like to make kokum chutney, especially with parathas.
That reminds me Kalyani, some time back I had dinner with some friends and one of the guests , a Maharashtrian lady had bought a very spicy but tasty chutney made with garlic, green chilies and probably mustard and said it was a popular dish in her community ..Do you know about it ?
Usha, there are hundreds of types of chutneys prepared in Maharashtra, both wet as well as dry preparations. What she must have served you is probably what we call as 'kharda'. Although I do not use mustard in that. My version of it is , fry green chillies in oil for a few minutes, grind the chilliies, garlic and a little bit of salt. And add lemon juice. That's it. It could be the one she served you. But each family has their own version of chutneys which others would not make.
