Yet again Sehwag scored a century for India in Test Matches and yet again his runs came at a rollicking pace. This time it was scored at better than run a against Sri Lanka at Kanpur on 24th November 2009 when he scored 131 in just 122 balls. Sehwags greatest contribution to Indian cricket is the fact that he scores his runs at such a fast pace that it gives bowlers lof of time and overs to finish matches.
Scoring at more than run a ball or at more than run a ball is not new to Sehwag as this is something we have come to expect of Sehwag and he delivers it more often than not However when it comes to one dayers Sehwag has struggled for consistency. Sehwag by the very high standards he has set for himself is a failure in one dayers because he is never going to be proud of his average of 33.98 after 211 one dayers. and neither is he going to happy with the fact that he was just 11 centuriesto his credit after playing 200 plus one dayers. Infact players with far lesser talent than Sehwag have better career figures than him.
The problem with Sehwag is that he tries to score a run of every ball in one dayers. He feels guilty if he does not get a run of every ball feeling he is letting the team down. Sehwag must realize one thing that for a player of his calibre, there is no need to adopt a different approach towards batting in one dayers. If Sehwag plays one dayers with the same approach he adopts in tests, he will get his runs at a fast pace and at the same time get big hundreds. The key to Sehwags success in Test Matches is the fact that he stays rooted at the crease patiently and waits for the loose deliveries. Sehwag is in no hurry to play a stroke in Test Matches as he plays lot of dot balls being sure of the fact that there is a loose delivery around the corner as the bowler is bound to lose his patience and the best thing about Sehwag is that he backs himself to put the loose delivery away for boundaries or sixes. Sehwags dominating presence and reputation is advantageous to hm as bowlers bowl too many boundary balls as they lose their concentration in trying to be extra careful because of their fear for him.
If Sehwag wants to be successful in one dayers, he should extend the same approach of batting in tests to one dayers and Sehwag should target to bat out the entire quota of overs. Once he is able to last crease for about 40 to 45 overs he should be easily be able to get to a double century, a feat never achieved in one dyers. Sehwag is one player who should back himself to get double centuries in Tests or One dayers everytime he gets past 50 given his talent.
