Sachin Tendulkar has often been criticized for not performing well in finals of tournament. The point of discussion in this topic is not about Sachin's performance in finals but the very credibility of the value of a final these days as most finals being played these days are finals involving three teams only. With the exception of World Cup and Champions tournament one hardly finds a tournament which has four or more teams participating in the tournament.
Origin of Tri Series:- In most cases a one day series is scheduled between teams which are to participate in a Test Series. Let us take for example Australia and England are scheduled to play a Test Series in Australia and New Zealand have already finished a Test Series in Australia. In this case New Zealand which already finished the Test Series is asked to stay back in Australia for a tri series and they would be joined by visitors England and hosts Australia. Therefore Australia, England and New Zealand teams form the teams for the triangular series.
Tri Series lack intensity are often Boring:- In a triangular series it is known in advance well before the commencement of the tournament as to who are the teams going to make the final as the third team is very weak. If a team like Zimbabwe is part of triangular series involving India and Sri Lanka it is a well known fact that Zimbabve will be eliminated. Except the final between India and Sri Lnaka which is a foregone conclusion there is no interest whatsoever in the entire tournament. Even the league matches played between the stronger teams lack intensity as there is nothing at stake at it hardly matters whichever team loses.
Suggestions to bring in more intensity in triangular series.
Instead of a couple of triangular series being played at different venues, it would be good to have both clubbed together so that it becomes a six nation tournament and even the league matches generate interest. For example if separate tri series are to be proposed to be held in India and Pakistan, both can be clubbed together and played in one of the countries as a six nation tournament.
Another proposal would be having a bilateral series so that both teams are under pressure to win each and every matches. The matches generate lot of intensity if it is played between two equally matched teams. A match between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe or between India and Sri Lanka is bound to bring in the same intensity.
The above proposals if implemented will bring intensity among players and also intensity among viewers and paying public.
