Indian selectors for a change has taken a bold decision to axe Yuvraj Singh who has been one of the batting mainstays for India in recent years. While selectors need to be complemented for taking taking a bold decision, the big question is if Yuvraj deserves the axe then why are others retained in the team especially the so called bowlers.
Yuvraj Singh is the fifth highest run getter for India in the history of one dayers. Yuvraj's tally of 7253 runs has been exceeded only by Sachin Tendulkar, Sourva Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Azharuddin. Yuvraj Singh has 12 hundreds in one dayers which places him joint third in all time list behind Sachin and Ganguly and on par with Sehwag and Dravid. After averaging a remarkable 53.06 in 2006 Yuvraj Singh has never looked back and the lowest he averaged during this period was 38.82 in 2008, an average many people would proudly take at the end of their careers.
If Yuvraj Singh has been dropped because of poor form, why our pacemen Zaheer, Nehra are retained inspite of churning out mediocre performances match after match and series after series. There was a time when Irfan Pathan was assured of a spot in the team irrespective of his performance. Pathan was picked up as a bowler but when his performances were not good enough to find a place in the team the selectors just for the sake of retaining him in the team picked him as a all rounder. If one applies the same logic Yuvraj Singh easily fits into the role firstly in the capacity of match winning specialist batsmen and if a situation arises in the role of a batting all rounder.
If players like Zaheer, Nehra, Ravindra Jadeja and a host of mediocre players are picked in the team, then there is no reason why Yuvraj should be left out. Infact the players mentioned above should find a place in the team only after Yuvraj Singh.
