Gandhi was vehemently opposed to any plan that partitioned India into two separate countries. An overwhelming majority of Muslims living in India, side by side with Hindus and Sikhs, were in favour of Partition. Additionally Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the leader of the Muslim League, commanded widespread support in West Punjab, Sindh, North-West Frontier Province and East Bengal. The partition plan was approved by the Congress leadership as the only way to prevent a wide-scale Hindu-Muslim civil war. Congress leaders knew that Gandhi would viscerally oppose partition, and it was impossible for the Congress to go ahead without his agreement, for Gandhi's support in the party and throughout India was strong. Gandhi's closest colleagues had accepted partition as the best way out, and Sardar Patel endeavoured to convince Gandhi that it was the only way to avoid civil war. A devastated Gandhi gave his assent.

Gandhi was nominated way back in 1940s when the world scenario was completely diffrent. There were few countries which were still fighting for independence. Also, the second world war happened during that time.

Gandhi ji was nominated for the Noel peace prize 5 times between 1937 and 1947 but never won it. And in the year 1948,there were high chances that he would have got it but he was assassinated a few days before the nomination process was held. Instead that year no nobel prize was given as the commitee thought there was no suitable candidate. And yeah,they did consider the posthumous award for Gandhi but eventually decided against it.

There is the aforementioned Dr Samar. Now 50 years old, she graduated from a Kabul medical school in the middle of the Soviet invasion. She was forced to flee Kabul for a more central part of Afghanistan, where, though barely into her training she began attempting to treat patients against a background of extreme poverty, war, and harassment by the Taliban, who have virtually criminalised the delivery of reproductive health services to women and girls. In an article for the New England Journal of Medicine she describes having “to walk or travel on horseback or by donkey for three or four hours in each direction” to get to a patient, often finding that she had died before she got there. In her long, but ultimately triumphant career, she has been forced to smuggle birth control supplies under her clothing; she has endured death threats and been jailed; her hospitals have been bombed and looted by Taliban, and her medical director jailed for a year without charges; she was appointed to the Karzai government’s legislature then forced to resign when she was made comments that were critical of sharia law in an interview with foreign journalist.

Another criticism of the peace-prize are the notable omissions, namely the failure to award individuals with widely recognized contributions to peace. Foreign Policy magazine lists Mahatma Gandhi, Eleanor Roosevelt, Václav Havel, Ken Saro-Wiwa, Sari Nusseibeh, Corazon Aquino and Liu Xiaobo as people who "never won the prize, but should have".
The omission of Gandhi has been particularly widely discussed, including in public statements by various members of the Nobel Committee. The Committee has confirmed that Gandhi was nominated in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and, finally, a few days before he was murdered in January 1948. The omission has been publicly regretted by later members of the Nobel Committee. In 1948, the year of Gandhi's death, the Nobel Committee declined to award a prize on the ground that "there was no suitable living candidate" that year. Later, when the Dalai Lama was awarded the Peace Prize in 1989, the chairman of the committee said that this was "in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma Gandhi".

Another quiet hero is Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynaecologist who, according to his Wikipedia entry, works in the Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, where he specializes in the treatment of women who have been gang-raped by Congolese militia:

Mukwege has probably become the world’s leading expert on how to repair the internal physical damage caused by gang rape. He has treated 21,000 women during the Congo’s 12-year war, some of them more than once, performing up to 10 surgeries a day during his 18-hour working days.

Still, in a way, by ignoring these heroes, the committee may have been on to something. The sad fact is that crusading for womens’ rights in places like Pakistan and the Congo does not bring peace. If you subscribe to the theory that much of the roiling of the Islamic world, the launching of suicide bombers etc. is a reaction by panicked male supremacists to the creeping modernization of women, then “empowering women” with birth control and the like actually, in the short term, encourages war.

But yeah, Nobel prize was given to those who deserved it. Nobel prize is given to those who deserve it. Obama's becoming President of U.S. was one friggin big thing and to know more, "wiki" it. Aise hi to nahin diya na... Kuch to baat hai na!!

Now, what can be done? Nothing, right? BTW, Gandhi started this "non-violence" movement and all that BUT at the same time (I guess) everyone knows that he was the backbone of India-Pakistan separation.

So the word PEACE had a much bigger meaning that time, unlike what it has today.

May be at that time, Nobel Prize for peace wasnt only for Fighting WITH peace like gandhi did, but was also for fighting FOR peace. Ofcourse, Gandhi was fighting for independence. Moreover, the "Chauri Chaura Kaand" was like a black spot on his non violence movement

And if u have a look over what all hapened in world that time, yes, there were many other leaders i blv, who contributed in world peace. They were not talked abt like Gandhi, but it doesnt mean that their efforts shud b underestimated.

Remember, every country has its own Hero.

Talking abt Obama, yup, i think he never did any such great thing for peace for which he shud be awarded with Nobel prize. Yes, he is the first black president of America, but that's like his personal n the black people community Achievement, nothing to do with peace.

Although, the nobel prize committee said that they gave the award for his intentions n to encourage him for spreading world peace, but that's like big time non Justice with those who actually WORKED for world peace
