The life is worth living, is inherent in the conduct of all living being. Those who do not think life worth living do not live and the world never bothers for them. Many of us do not think life worth living and worth enjoying. In reality desire is life and it is frustrated, desire that takes the worth whileness out of life. When we fall in love with someone and he/she does not love us back in return, then the desire for life goes out of our heart. When our trusted friend stabs in our back, when our dearest dreams vanish like smoke into the air and when we try to down our thoughts in work-then life seems a poor thing indeed and we could leave it without regret.
But what makes our life worth living?
There are three ways we get pleasures from our life- from the senses, from the emotions and from the intellect.
The pleasures of the senses come in two ways i.e. sex and alcohol. Generally people do not admit this. When they are frankly forced to conclude they admit that they had enjoyed much in drinking or indulging in sex. This is the philosophy of all. But this pleasure is momentary.
The pleasures of the emotions are more subtle and more perenial. They are affection given and received, the love of friend for friend, the love of lovers and the love of parents and children. Here we have to include all our ambitions and tricky forms of compensation. One may want to be a conqueror, or a scholar or a lover or a philanthropist. These all things consist in getting emotional satisfaction.
The pleasures of the intellect are ever lasting. Friends may betray and sweethearts can be faithless but knowledge is always there. This is a pleasure that requires training, perserverance, and intelligence. This pleasure can never do any harm. In the real sense of the terms our life is worth living for the sake of these exquisite moments that it gives us now and then. From human relationships come deep satisfactions- the smile of a child, woman, or friend and the discussions of a man are the riches that life gives us. They are more precious than everything else.
