Every individual, whether he is a student, an employee or businessman, has his own schedule from day to day. Even a housewife or a domestic servant has her own daily schedule.
Though the routine keeps the person occupied, life does become dull and boring. The human mind craves for a change of activity. This is where a hobby comes into the picture. In his spare time, an individual can indulge in an activity quite different from the job which he is compelled to do, whether he likes it or not, in order to earn a decent income. A hobby is an activity in which the individual is interested and can do whenever he likes. The list of hobbies is never ending.
It may be art, music, reading, collecting something, photography, gardening, literature, composing, designing, solving crossword or other puzzles, study of some non-academic subject, games, sports or social work, which the individual pursues just to derive some personal satisfaction.
Since a hobby is an activity close to one’s heart, one enjoys doing it and consequently gains some mastery over it. It is not impossible that gradually it may become a source of income and in some rare cases the person may devote full time to the activity which was begun as a hobby.
A person whose job demands a lot of intellectual effort should have a hobby which will give him relaxation to the brain and some physical exercise. Likewise, a person whose job involves a lot of physical strain, should have a hobby involving intellectual exercise.
In some rare cases it may happen that an activity which begins as a hobby turns out to be so lucrative that it supersedes the job.
Finally, we may say that developing a hobby is as essential as having a job so that a person has varied activity, adequate income and never suffers from monotony or boredom. A wise person will divide his time among a number of activities so that he enjoys many benefits.
