Books are a man’s best friends and a great hobby to pursue. They give new views to life; teach us how to live; increase one’s mission; shapes our thought and imagination.
Books bring stories of exciting adventure, lively humor, dangerous exploration, and great love, inspiration to new achievement, hope for the discouraged and strength for the defeated.
A large measure of man’s progress comes about as a result of reading. To practice the art of reading, develop a hungry, curious, questioning mind and then seek your answer in books. You open doors when you open books… doors which lead to the world of creative thought and imagination.
The principal object of your reading should be to gain useful knowledge. Our vocabularies are broadened as we read good books. Reading nourishes the mind.
To become good thinkers we should become good readers. To read in haste without thinking or reflecting or to read with a wandering mind contributes very little. You must retain what you read and apply it in the great lessons of life.
Reading is a pursuit opens to every one, rich and poor a like, and a source of immense pleasure. A love for books is the sign of a cultivated man or woman.
Remember important points
- Read something each day. Discipline yourself to a regular schedule of reading. With only fifteen minutes a day, you can read about twenty books a year.
- Read to increase your knowledge, awareness and insight.
- Read with a red pencil in your hand, underlining the important passages, so you can quickly review the book.
- Read several books at a time, turning from one to the other as your mood changes … a biography, a novel, a volume of history, story etc.
- While reading sit erect in a comfortable chair at a table or desk.
- The reading area should be well lighted to avoid eye strain.
- We get as much out of things as we put into them. So, read a book with interest and it will pay you back with interest.
The world of books
Is the most remarkable creation of the man?
Nothing else that he build ever lasts
Monuments fall
Nations perish
Civilizations grow old and die out
And after an era of darkness
New races build others
