If you are between 40 to 54 years then you should have an eye exam every two to four years. If you are between 55 and 64 years then you should have an eye exam every one to three years. If you are above 65 years of age then examine your eye every couple of years.
Children also have to be tested for such problems periodically. Children as well as adolescents have to tested for far sightedness. School going children should be examined at school every two years.
