We all know that our body is made up of - 43% to 75% of water, depending on our age. Still, in our busy lives we just ignore this important ingredient of our life by drinking less water.
Your water needs depend on many factors, including your health, how active you are, your diet and where you live. But on an average, an adult can have 2 litres of water per day.
I know its difficult to put the habit of drinking more water daily but you can have a good quality 1 litre plastic or glass bottle, filled with fresh water, on your desk, or near your work area, or in the kitchen and finish it 2 times a day. I mean drink 2 litres of water daily, at regular intervals, not all at a time. Don't forget to wash the bottle daily.
There are lots of advantages of drinking more water. I want to share some of them with you.
Water makes your metabolism burn calories 3% faster. It circulates through the blood and helps transport nutrients and oxygen towards organs and cells.
On feeling hungry drink some water 15 minutes before eating! Drinking more water can help to prevent overeating and benefit weight loss. It also serves as a medium to carry metabolic wastes away from the body in the form of urine and sweat.
On sunny days, in the absence of sufficient water in your body, the temperature regulation breaks down and body temperature increases - and this leads to sunstroke.
When you lose more than optimal levels of fluid due to various conditions (not drinking sufficient water, heavy exercise, illness, etc), the body tries to adjust for the loss of water by constricting blood vessels so that the rate of loss of water (due to sweating and respiration) is reduced - which in turn leads to higher blood pressure.
Increased dehydration causes your cells and tissues to absorb water from the blood stream and thus decreases the volume of the blood flow.
In the process of sweating, it also removes impurities in the skin and cleanses it - leaving you with a healthy and younger looking skin.
Water does not contain any calories - so unlike the soft drinks it’s not going to increase your weight. Some studies have pointed towards how increased water consumption can in fact cause weight loss.
It works best for people who are already over-weight and are controlling their appetite in order to lose weight.
Often water can help cure stomach acid problems, and water along with fiber can cure constipation (often a result of dehydration).
Drinking a healthy amount of water has also been found to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 45%. Drinking lots of water can also reduce the risk of bladder cancer by 50% and potentially reduce the risk of breast cancer.
Note: If you are fasting or eating very little, dont drink too much of water. Water taken in must be in balance with body salt - electrolytes. Dieters, Athletes or Kidney problems should avoid drinking more water.
Drinking water will not hurt you if you still maintain a healthy diet and drink little quantities of water throughout the day.
