Importance of Standards:
•    Telecommunication industry has accepted some standards that are required to govern the physical, electrical and procedural characteristics of communication equipment.
•    It covers functions, interfaces and services used in ISDN

Advantages of Standards:
•    Increased productivity and efficiency with low cost.
•    Increased competition by smaller firms to market products, readily acceptable by the customer.
•    Expansion of International Trade because of the feasibility of exchange of products among countries

The I series recommendations:
•    A set of recommendations called I-series (Initial set of specification) introduced in 1988.
•    Types of I series standards: I.100  to I.500
•    Types of I series Advanced Version:I.500,I.600,I.700
I.100 Series
* General structure to ISDN

I.200 Series
* Service capabilities
* This provides the services to be provided to the user,i.e to satisfy a specific telecommunication requirement to the customers

Standard services
# ITU - T Services:Telegraphy,Telephony and data.
# ITU - Telemetry services:Teletex,facsimile,videotex and message 
Handling
* The I.200 series classifies services into low-level and high-level Teleservices.
* For each service various attributes are defined and configured by agreement between the subscriber and the provider
* I.200 series focuses on the user.

I.300 Series – “Overall Network Aspects and Functions”
* I.300 focuses on the Network in terms of how the network goes about providing those services.
* To account for the complexity of a connection that may involve 2 0r more users(e.g. A conference call) plus a related common channel dialogue


I.400 series – “User Network Interface”
* This series deals with the interface between the user and the network.
* This includes,
(a) Physical Configuration: This is for , how ISDN functions are configured into equipment.
(b)Transmission Rates: The data rates and combination of data rates to be offered to the user
(c)Protocol Specification: The protocols at OSI layers 1 through 3 that specify the user-network interaction.


I.500 Series – “Internet work Interface”
* It is necessary to provide interworking between an ISDN and other types of networks to allow communication between terminals belonging to equivalent services offered through networks.
* The I.500 series deals with interfaces between ISDN and other types of networks.


I.600 Series – “Maintenance Principles”
* This provides guidance for maintenance of the ISDN subscriber installation, the ISDN basic access, primary access and higher data rate services.

I.700 Series – “Broadband ISDN equipment aspects”
* It covers functional and characteristics of ATM and various management aspects
