Engineering is one of the most sought after career options nowadays. That is the reason why tens of thousands of school pass-outs prepare like nuts for engineering entrance exams and even screw up their high school result for that! (I never did that *wink*)
So, I'll just try and give some insight about things you may not know before you head into the murky water's of Engineering Life!
1. NOTHING LIKE YOU EXPECT
Firstly, let me assure you, engineering colleges aren’t like what they depict in the movies. No hanging around in the canteen while bunking lectures man! Your H.O.D will bite your behind as soon as your name comes in the short attendance list. And short attendance means “screwed internal marks!”
2. WHERE ARE THE FEMALES?
Secondly, and most importantly, the estrogen levels will dishearten you. Unless you are gay or already committed with a hot girl, you’ll want to travel in a time machine to your high school and change your stream from science to something else. Seriously, cute girls are a rare species among the already negligible lot of your female counterparts.
3. NO LAZY SONG HERE
This one is for the lazy ones. If you love sleep (like me), can’t write continuously for an hour (again like me) and are used to passing exams by studying at the last time (not like me, I never passed) then dear oh dear, engineering isn’t for you. 48 theory subjects, 25+ practical subjects, 96 mid-terms, 48 end-terms, plus practical’s, assignments(lot’s of them), seniors’ assignments(details later :D) and many more things will eat the life out of you. So my dear procrastinator, keep your hands off those admission forms.
4. RA..RA..RAGGING
The picture in the right is a scene from a famous bollywood movie and pretty much demonstrates my next point. Yeah, ragging happens in other colleges too. But when people frustrated with their studies, their backs, their H.O.D, their assignments, their life, start ragging you..well God save you from their angst. And yeah, sometimes you have to write your senior's assignments too. And trust me, writing 25 pages in one night for someone else isn't a pleasant experience!
5. FOR THE FEMALES
I just read the above 4 points and realised that most of the stuff I wrote was too "guy-specific". So, if you're a girl, a studious girl, a studious girl who only focuses on studies(<-did i just write that?), then your engineering college days will be livable 'cause you can put the extra effort that the male clan can't(well, most of them). But if you don't fulfill the above requirements, try doing something else(cooking course, maybe :D).
6. LEARNING "CRAP"
Does a software engineer needs to know how many types of hammers are there? NO!
Does an automobile engineer needs to cin and cout his engine parts? NO!
And does an electronics engineer needs to know what happens when we add NITRIC ACID to GOD KNOWS WHAT? .......NO!!
Unnecessary subjects add up to the study pressure and provide us ZERO help during our jobs. To be honest, calling all this unusable info "crap" isn't wrong on my part.
8. DID I MENTION THERE ARE NO/FEW GIRLS?
Oh I did! Keep reading..
8. EXAM, BACK, REVAL, REBACK, EXAM
In college, many of us get familiar with a new term called "Back". It's a circumstance that occurs when a student fails in a subject. The horrified student who never failed in a subject in high school quickly fills up the forms for reappearing and revaluation. Most of the times, reval doesn't work and the poor guy gives the exam again. By then, the next semester exams have arrived and the poor guy again gives a not-so-great performance. He gets a back again and he fills up back, reback and reval forms again. This is the vicious cycle most of the not-so-good-at-studying-day-and-night group gets caught in. Do I need to write more?
So people, this is pretty much i can come up with right now.
Hope you liked my first article!
Thank You!
